Unsolicited telemarketing calls

By Palmer Brown, 25 Aug 2008 | Country: United States
I have received more than 100 telemarketing calls in the past week.  Apparently, somebody deliberately or intentionally signed me up on the Internet to receive information.  The person they are asking for is unknown to me.  Most of the telemarketers are polite when I ask them to remove my name from the list.  Today, however, I had a female telemarketer tell me that she would not remove my number from the list until I let her talk to the person she asked for.  I told her that I do not know who that person is and that this is a personal cell phone.  I also asked for the name of her company.  She then proceeded to tell me again that she would not take my name from the list until she spoke to this person.  I then hung up on her.  No other information other than the number on my CID, 407-982-1106.

Reported to be a telemarketer calling from Florida, possibly selling vacations.  Complaints started August 1.

This response was posted.  If accurate, it would indicate that the "telemarketer" using this phone number is running a scam, with unauthorized use of a legitimate company's name.  That would make it likely that all money sent them would "disappear".

"Kiley W, Director of IT - 13 Aug 2008
This post is to everyone reading this BLOG.  I am the Director of IT for Spinnaker Resorts and while we do operate our own call centers, these phone numbers is not associated with our company or any of our vendors.  We have opened our own investigation of these numbers and have contacted the appropriate federal and state agencies to report the abuse.  We are very concerned that another party is using our company name for illicit purposes.

We will continue our investigation and report any information we find to the authorities."

According to their website, they manage timeshare resorts.

"Apparently, somebody deliberately or intentionally signed me up on the Internet to receive information."

More likely, they bought some sucker list from another company, but they falsely claim someone requested that they call, since they are probably failing to scrub their lists against the Do Not Call list.  The list information is probably old, so the name they have associated with your current number may be someone else.

There are a number of telemarketers based in Florida known for selling scam "vacation packages".  If the "product" was a scam, you wouldn't expect them to follow other laws, since they would probably be ready to "take the  money and run", anyway.

File complaints with FTC and Florida Attorney General for Do Not Call violations.  It is a Telemarketing Sales Rule to use autodialers to call cell phones without prior authorization.  It is also a Do Not Call violation to refuse to add your number to their internal Do Not Call list and cease calling you.
