This complaint is regarding Guthy-Renker,which is the parent company of both ProActiv Solutions & VitaPower supplements. I was a satisfied customer of ProActiv Solutions (acne cleansing system) for years, beginning in the mid-90s (before they used celebrity endorsements).  My mother got the account for me & I used the product for many years; we terminated the account only due to accumulating a stockpile of the product. Cut to this summer, when I opened an account with ProActiv for myself. There was an "Introductory Offer" of the VitaPower vitamins for $3.99, and I accepted it.  There was no information about how much the product was after the "introductory offer." When I received the product, it came with absolutely no paperwork - no receipt, no product information, no contact information, no way to accept or decline an actual subscription to the product.  Due to this lack of information, it was unclear that VitaPower was a separate entity from ProActiv.   The fact that there was no product information, receipt or any other paperwork gave me pause, and I did not want to continue with the product (I didn't try it; I  just didn't see fit  to add more vitamins to my regimen).  I should have taken steps to contact the company, but there wasn't any contact info provided with the product, and I promptly forgot about it ... until a month later when $33.99 was taken out of my account by the VitaPower company.  I did then contact ProActiv for VitaPower's customer service number and promptly called to cancel my unwanted and unsolicited subscription, only to get a very sarcastic attitude from the agent when I declined to listen to his lecture about cancelling without trying the product, and trying to keep me from cancelling the account.  I called back again to clarify about the lack of information about the product & subcription status with the shipment of the product & how it was a suspicious & deceptive tactic, to no avail.  I then expressed my displeasure re: the experience with VitaPower and the (lack of)information given when signing up for the "introductory offer" with ProActiv, whereupon I learned that VitaPower is part of the Guthy-Renker "Family" (umbrella company) and, in short, did not care about my negative experience.  I have subsequently cancelled my account with ProActiv.  It's shocking to me that they would be so unconcerned with complaints regarding these dodgy & cheap sales tactics, given that they actually have competition these days. Boo!

If you only authorized and agreed to $3.99, but they later took an additional $33.99 out of your account without your authorization, file a written dispute with your bank for the fraudulent withdrawl.  Contact your bank immediately regarding the charge, close the account to prevent future charges, and make sure you send a written dispute to your bank within 60 days of the date on the statement showing the unauthorized charge.  Ask your bank to provide, and fill out and send a fraud affidavit.

It is common for businesses selling "nutritional", "diet", or other "health" supplements to engage in "trial offer" scams that include placing fraudulent charges they claim you agreed to.  They may even have hid the alleged terms somewhere on their website, to substantiate some alleged "agreement", but for some reason those stupid consumers just don't seem to find it...  "What's your problem?  We conned you fair and square!"

The number of complaints indicates customers were never intended to find it.  You were never intended to "cancel" an "agreement" you weren't supposed to be aware you had made.  If it were truly some "misunderstanding", they would long ago have clarified the terms of their offer, and the misunderstandings would have ceased.  The "trial offer" is little different than a phishing scam for your bank account information, under the pretense of an order for merchandise, but the result as you found is little different.

See, for example, other reports on this site under "Health & Beauty".  BBB has reports on a number of them.

File complaints with FTC, your state AG, the AG from the state in which they are located, and BBB.

I started using the Natural Advantage  products around 2008. I love them! Unyil last year, 2914, I was charged through bank draft. Suddenly,  Guthrie-Renner stopped charging my account, turning  $36 over to a colection agency! I contacted them via phone and certified letter, to which they answered that they not only tried to charge my bank once, but SIX times, each was refused. I went to my bank. They looked it up & NO charges had been submitted!  I am sending another certified letter with bank statements attached. (However, they do Not give out a Corporate address!) I hope they will comply, because my next contact will have to be through my attorney!

If you continue to do business with these sorts of companies, you can expect more of the same.

I too received the trial product sans paperwork, so had no idea of what I was required to do next only to see a withdrawal for the $33.99 to my account. I too wish to cancel but whom to call since they 'forgot' to include paperwork about cancellations or even the benefit/side effects of this product. Guess I'll need to go to their site and start from there.

My wife and I have had issues with Guthy Renkers customer service as well.  You can read about it here:

I once worked for a call center that handled Guthy Renker accounts.  The sales script tells you it is a 1.00 plus 3.99 s&h introductory.  Then goes on to tell you future shipments are 60day supply every two months at 29.95 plus 3.99 MONTHLY charged to your card (which is total of 59.90 plus 7.98 s&h for each 60 day supply).  The customer service number is ON THE VITAMIN LABEL.  I always tried to emphasize key points during the upsell while I worked there, and reitirate it is a auto shipment program.  If you are offered a product "valued" at 29.95 for only a dollar, yes it is highly likely it is an auto refill program.  Listen for key words like INTRODUCTORY, 30 day TRIAL.  It usually means it isn't a one time shipment offer.  The customer service end after the order is placed is handled somewhere else, we who take the orders don't have a clue about that. Once the order is in the system we no longer have access to it. Sorry about your bad experience.

Proactive is now promoting Refer-A-Friend where customers are offered a "referral fee" when they refer a friend who is new to Proactiv.  The new friend receives a free starter kit for the cost of S&H.  Today, five ebay sellers are charging potential customers to collect their email address and refer and refer it to Proactiv as a new Friend, and collect their referral fee.

When brought to the attention of Proactive, they said they have no control over their customers and if they want to scam potential customers using Proactiv's promotions as their tool, that wasn’t their problem.

I asked Proactiv to at least go to Ebay and type in Proactiv Coupons and review the auction to determine if they were in violation of the Refer A Friend promotion.  Again, they made it clear they didn’t care how they got the new customers, and if someone was stupid enough to pay for a free promotion then Proactive and the customer selling the promotion are ahead.

I was then told if I didn’t like Proactiv’s resolution to take it to the next level – Guthy-Renker – and the call was ended.

Hi, I recently got sucked in to the whole Meaningful Beauty Bolognie, when I received the package I was a little disapointed in the sizes of the bottles, when I used the lotions they stung, I called the Customer Service Centre and told them I did not want to continue with my subscription, they said I could give it another month to try it and my rights would stay the same, I have it anonher month and I still was not impressed.
I sent the bottle back RECORDED delivery, that was June 1st 2009, they were signed for on June 5th 2009, When I called Customer Service to chase up my refund they were adamant that they still had not recieved the package, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS PROOF ON CANADA POST'S WEBSITE !
I have spent thew last week emailing them to chase this up and keep being told it takes 6 weeks to get your money back, has anyone else had this problem ?
If so what did you do and how did it turn out ?

Yes that happened to me too with Proactiv, I ordered a $25 sample of it but when I found out they charged me $90 I tried to cancel and they won't do it...I returned it as soon as I got it and they received it and signed for it a week later and still no refund. When I called about it they denied ever getting the product back, I even have a certificate of delivery to prove I did. I am shocked that they are allowed to operate like this, it is very clearly a scam.

I have also had a huge problem with Guthy- Renker.  I thought I authorized a one time trial of the meaningful beauty products. I was unimpressed.  I was surprised when I saw a charge to my account a month later. I had since moved out of the country and did not ever receive the order. I have tried repeatedly to contact the company but always get the same message; that they can not do anything without my account number (which I do not have). Now, I see that there is a third charge on my visa!  They are continuing to charge me. I should have read more carefully in the beginning. I usually do. They must have been very sneaky with this one. Now I have no idea how to get them to stop charging me for product that is going to the new tenants of my old apartment in Canada.

Well I live in the UK and I got conned by Guthy Renker aswell. I ordered pro-active and sheer cover products - and, like so many of you, I had no idea that I was agreeing to repeat orders. The first thisng that happened was my shipment was held at customs and I received a card telling me that I had to pay over £12 to have it released (this had not been revealed when I placed my order). As I had already paid for the order, I coughed up the extra £12+ and was horrified at the small quantity of the products. Although I didn't realise that I had been conned into repeat orders, I e-mailed Guthy Renker straight away to complain about the hidden charges and the poor value for money and to tell them that I would never buy any products from them again. Clear enough? Apparently not - because they carried on taking money from my account - and I still haven't managed to get it back. My mailbox now contains over 40 e-mails back and forth, with different divisions of this rip off company. I have asked time and time again for a copy of the agreement, or the terms and conditions which they claim I accepted, but they just ignore my requests. As for my money, they say I can't have it back until I return the products they sent to me - but I can't do that, because I have never received anything since the first delivery! Is there a regulatory body in the States where I can report these bandits? If so can someone give me the contact details please?

It is scary to see how Guthy Renker has been getting away for such a long time with their deceptive selling techniques!!! I have also fallen in the same trap as many others. Guthy Renker advertise their products under the impression that you are making a one off payment for one delivery!!! Wrong!!! I made two orders back in 2007 for myself and a freind of mine following watching a retail channel. It was quite clear during my telephone conversation that I was making a one off purchase for two sets of Sheer cover makeup. two years later and having moved from house and account details, I realised they have been sending their products to my old address and withdrawing unauthorised money out of my old account!!! Once I found out about these withdrawals I managed to find their contact details. So far I have been given different information as to why this has indeed occured and inconsistant promises as to how they are going to deal with the problem. In my recent conversation with one of the consultants I was refused to be given any information as to where they are with my case and no news about the refunds I have been promised! The consultant would not give me any information about my order which I had made originally for my freind which was done under my account number with my address for it's delivery. I was told by this unbelievably rude adviser that she can not discuss my account with me due to "consumer Credit Act"!!! My concern is that this member of Guthy Renker was not only un-aware of the essence of the Consumer Credit Act, but she was ill mannered and un-helpful! I was refused to speak to a manager and the excuse was that all managers are "busy" which looking at the number of complaints and dis-satisfied customers they have to deal with, is undrestandable!

I have writen to Guthy Renker (Sheer cover) customer care by email and have been promised a responce within the next two days so I will keep my fingers crossed and hope they would do the right thing for a change!!

How do you go about cancelling, once an order has been initiated?  I ordered Dean Martin shows and cannot figure out how to stop them.

I too have been scammed by Guthy Renker. I used Pro Active years ago and was happy with the product, but stopped because they kept sending it when I didn't need it.
I decided I would try it again because my skin needs some help, and the product is a good product. What I dislike is  how they take money whenever they decide too. When I order the intro Proactive, they talked me into trying the vitamins for a small price. Well, you guessed it. Shortly, they took money out of my acct. for the Proactive I didn't order. I called they put the money back and canceled my acct. or so I thought. A month later, money was taken out for the vitamins that I didn't order. I emailed them and they advised me my acct was closed. After 5 emails requesting my acct closed again, which they sent emails back telling me it was closed, I decided to call them. Finally, after all of this time I was told that I had to call another number to cance the vitamins. I called, the lady was very nice and told me I would have a refund in 24-36 hrs. We'll see!
Never again will I order from this company and wouldn't advise anyone else to do so.

Hi there. May I ask how your cancellation went after waiting? Did it really stop or you had to close your account?

      Thank you
