I left my job and have been paying for COBRA for health insurance. For the first 18 months, I paid my employer the $753.00 monthly premium (for an HMO). No problems. After 18 months, you are eligible for 18 more months through CAL COBRA. But instead of paying the old employer, you pay the insurance co. When the original COBRA was running out, I received a form from Pacificare letting me know that I was eligible for 18 more months. I sent in the form with the payment.
For three months, Pacificare could not find the form, never received the payments etc. Finally, with the deadline looming, I sent an overnight letter to Pacificare with the forms and another check for premiums. About three days later, the overnight check as well as the other "lost" checks were all cashed. Meanwhile, I was paying cash for doctors visits as I had "no" insurance. To top it all off, in July 2007 I received a bill from Pacificare for 1050.00 for July's premium.
I received it July 3, 2007 it was due July 1, 2007. I tried calling but no one knew anything. I vernighted the check to Pacificare. It was cashed a few days later. I then received a notice from Pacificare, on July 17, 2007 stating I was cancelled as of June 1, 2007. No explanation. I contacted Pacificare and was told that my old employer had switched providers so I was no longer eligible for COBRA with Pacificare.
The letter included a warning that I only had 60 days from June 1, 2007 to secure new insurance. I was furious as Pacificare had almost $2,000.00 in premiums that they cashed but were now telling me that it takes 6-8 weeks to return the premiums. What a bunch of schmucks!!!
