I purchased a "leather" sofa and love seat about five years ago from Jennifer Convertibles.  The tags said "leather" and the salesperson person said they were "leather".  I paid about $2000 total for the two items thinking that price was about right since both items were leather.  The "leather" sofa and love seat starting pealing about a year ago.  Turns out, the hide is a composite of vinyl pigment as the top layer, polyproplyne mesh fabric in the middle layer and thin bottom layer of leather veneer.   When I called to complain, the sales person pointed out that on my receipt was a small box, in the small print, which was checked indicating the the actual "leather" was really just a small fraction of real leather.  I got ripped off.  Both love seat and sofa are pealed so badly that I had to get rid of them.

Know your leather.... I'm told that raw leather hide is generally cut/split into three layers... A top layer, middle layer and botton layer.  Full Grain (aka Top Grain) Leather is the top layer, and this is the material found in most high end quality leather furniture.  The middle layer and bottom layer are called "Split Grain Leather" . Top grain leather breathes better and is more durable than split grain leather.  It also holds the pigment better.  Split grain has basically a coat of non-breathable paint applied which generally peals off after a few years.  The crap I bought at Jennifer Convertibles wasn't even split grain.  Its called sucker, sap, fool, con job, etc. leather.
