I just received a letter telling me I owed a bill from verizon wireless.  I called and checked and do not owe any money to Verizon.  I called Sunrise and told them that and then he said well it  was actually an old bill from Alltel because Verizon bought them out back in 2007.  This bill was from then and I told him I have only been with Verizon no other wireless   Oh and Altel is still a wireless carrier in this area

There are a number of debt collectors who buy cheap, old debt, then use deliberately sloppy "skip-tracing" to attempt to "tag" someone with it, who may have little in common with the actual debtor but maybe the same last name.  They are basically trying to hide behind some "excusable error" as they try to collect based on the damage they might do to the wrong person's credit.

Send them a letter, mailed certified, notifying them that you dispute the alleged debt, and that it's not your account.  If you send a dispute letter within 30 days of receiving their first letter, they must cease collection until they obtain proof and send it to you.  If they continue collection without first verifying with the original creditor, they are violating FDCPA, and you can sue them.

If you have further problems, or if they fabricate some "verification" when you know you don't owe either Verizon or Alltel, file complaints with FTC and your state Attorney General.  Then get an attorney and sue them.  You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

My family recently switched to ATT Wireless from Verizon. We were very unhappy with the Verizon family plan. I contacted and visited Verizon stores to express my concerns. Gave them numerous opportunities to fix the wrong. The bills continued to rise. We had enough. Contacted verizon numerous times again to make sure we did not owe them any money. There was no contract so we were clear or so we thought. As soon as we switched carriers the calls started coming from Sunrise that we had an outstanding bill with Verizon. My wife documented names of the Verizon employees that cleared us. It did not matter. The calls continue.
