So I got a gym membership a few months ago, and decided to get a personal trainer through LA fitness as well. I was hesitant at first because I was only planning on being at the gym for two months before I moved away to school, and they wanted me to sign a contract for a year. After I explained this to the trainer, they explained that in two months I could cancel my membership by mailing a cancellation slip along with some type of paper work from the University I was attending as long as it had the address on it. So, I signed the contract. Two months go by, I do what I was told and mail a cancellation slip along with an acceptance letter from my school that included the address. However, here I am four months later realizing that they have been still taking out money every month from my account. I call coorperate and I am told that I can't cancel my membership unless I show them a changed address on my drivers lisence or a bill addressed to me with the new address. What this lady doesn't understand is I am living on campus. I don't have bills, and the address on my drivers license isn't going to change. I feel like I was lied to and used. I want my money back, and I want them to stop taking money out of my account. I am a college student, only working 12 hours a week. I cannot afford that membership. Not to mention the bills I have to pay for school. It is not my fault that the trainer's employed by LA fitness are giving out the wrong information.

DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING!!!!

Health club sales people routinely con their customers by getting them to sign up for long term contract with promises you can easily cancel.  It a commonly reported sales and contract fraud in this industry.

The sales people get larger commissions, and the health clubs themselves commonly profit from this by denying any knowledge of the fraud committed by their employees, and by continuing to take money from consumer accounts, ignoring or even just "losing" cancellations.

Only way to stop them from taking your money is to shut down your account.

They have probably set up your contract as a "loan" passed off to some partner "finance company", who will also pretend they "don't know" anything about your cancellation, but owe the whole year's amount to pay this "loan".

Most health club profits come from swindling fresh customers every new year.

Since they are swindling you, contact your local District Attorney's consumer fraud unit.

Send complaint to Orange County DA office, that is where the LA Fitness head office is located. Only if there are enough complaint will the DA office attend to the complaint. If you complain to your local office, that will not do it.
