For example, freecreditreport.com has been one several companies sued by FTC for deceptively advertising that they provide "free" credit reports, creating confusion with the official www.annualcreditreport.com site. Their reports are only "free" with their PAID service, charged monthly.

Here is their BBB report:

Note that they reached a stipulated settlement with FTC in 2007, permanently barring them from deceptively advertising their product as "free".
If you are being charged by this or any similar company for a credit report they advertised as "free", file complaints with your state AG, FTC, and BBB. Also contact your bank immediately to dispute the unauthorized charge, and close your credit card account to prevent future charges.
Follow up with a written complaint to your bank, sent to the dispute address on your statement so that it reaches your bank within 60 days of the statement date showing the disputed charges, to dispute the unauthorized charge. You might include excerpts from the BBB report for the specific company you are dealing with, if it shows other people have been making similar complaints, or that FTC has taken action against them.
