They-Asset Acceptance Laura Jean Debt Collection Agency- called us with someone else's name we never heard of. I called them to take our number off of their database. We don't have Caller ID block and the following month, they called for my husband's name. That is just plain RUDE. I asked them to take our phone number off of their database, but instead they replace that other person's name for my husband's. This is just WRONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. I had to go to www.donotcall.gov to register our phone number against telemarketers like that. Sad, but have too. We can't use caller id blocking since some of our family members have caller id services to check who calls. Hopes it works.

Blocking of incoming calls with no ID is different from blocking your outgoing calls from sending your own ID.  You may be able to block their incoming calls, while still showing your ID when calling out.

Also note that whenever you call an 800 (or other toll-free) number, your phone number is available to the company regardless of whether you have blocked your ID.

There appear to be a lot of debt collectors today who sill attempt to collect alleged debts from consumers they have done little to correctly identify.

Have you received any collection letters, or are there any collection accounts on your credit reports?

You might try contacting the Michigan Attorney General's office.
They are reported to have taken an interest in Asset Acceptance's activities.

this (800) 832-8587 number for Asset Acceptance... recording named as "laura James" asked for a variance of my name. Basically the "incorrect" name, not legal name, for me. Any "urgent business matter" made was with my legal name.  This is a variance, since they pronounced it as if it were a foreign name, but the legal name is clearly a normal sounding name. They took the alternate spelling and asked for that, showing that they are not a real company. I have no outstanding bills. Therefore, there is no reason for a bill collector to be contacting me. I should have no "urgent business matter" that would be legitimate, contacting me. Besides, anyone who know anything knows that deals don't find you, you find them.

"Laura James", or "Laura Jean", may be no more than an alias under which to leave phone messages, so that if any calls come back, any of their employees will know it is a response to such a message.

Keep an eye on your credit reports.  Even though you may know you don't owe any debts that would end up in the hands of a debt collector, does not mean some debt collector will not try to collect someone else's debt from you, or even put it on your credit reports.

    The whole industry is corrupt.

Somebody gave out my phone number as theirs and then skipped out on his debts leaving me dealing with companies like this.  The only way to stop them is to send a certified letter to their business address demanding your phone number be removed and that they stop calling.  I always tell them the phone number they are calling is in my name.  It works in about a month and then peace for about a month.  Then that debt collector sells it to another debt collector and the process starts all over again.  This company made their first call today.  I looked up the number, got their address and now I'm in the process of drafting the letter which will be mailed tomorrow.
    Good Luck!

I have been getting calls looking for a "Timothy James" from a collection company called Asset Acceptance. It is just a scam to get you to call in and request your number be removed form that person account. Then they hit you with what is supposedly a collection account in your own name. They told me that I owed Southwestern Bell Telephone a bill, which I DO NOT and NEVER have! Southwestern Bell merged with AT&T YEARS ago and I STILL have the SAME account I had in 1988 when they say this bill is from. These people are ridiculous!!

My daughter is an employee of Asset Acceptance. They are no worse than most collection agencies. The company policy is to closely follow all laws however, many of the collectors themselves bend the rules to increase their commissions. It is in the company's best interest to comply with collection laws as law suits and fines cost them an exorbitant amount of money.

This is the problem with junk debt buyers.  They set up commissions to entice employees to produce results.  Often junk debt buyers set up monthly collection goals and if you don't make it to that goal, Your fired.  This leaves collectors desperate to do whatever it takes, including breaking the law to collect money even if the debt is not legitimately owed.

The problem is that "don't ask, don't tell" attitude that creates a corporate culture of acceptance.  They silently condone illegal behaviour.

The illegal behaviour starts at the top of the leadership with re-aging of debts purchased using the credit reporting agencies as tools for extortion and it filters down from there.  That's why there are countless lawsuits.

If your daughter is well educated and intelligent, it would behoove her to look for a job with a reputable company rather than sell her soul to the bottom feeders of the industry and risk her professional reputation.

To everyone talking about outdated debt, check your credit and make sure they didn't reage a debt on your CRA.  Send a letter of dispute Certified Return Receipt requesting debt validation (Sample letters are all over the net), and make sure you tell them to cease and desist.  If they damage the credit, or continue with just one call after they receive your letter... find a consumer attorney and sue.  It's the only way to make these sharks learn to follow consumer protection laws.

Well they are also pretty stupid.  I was putting paper in the company fax machine and these idiots just happened to call at the same time. I picked it up thinking it was someone wanting to send a fax and wondering why the machine was down. I told the woman, who was super polite by the way that she was calling a dedicated fax line for a company. She apologized profusely and said she would remove the number. Wasnt two hours later they were calling again and do it twice a day or more The fax answers, realizes it isnt another fax and disconnects the call.  Has to be costing the dumb [***] when the call is connected. Well have fun. Not costing us anything.

I have recieved phone calls from these guys in the past! I even recieved a letter stating that if I paid $99 now that my $500 supposed debt that I owed them would be relieved. My dad was reading that letter from them the other day and caught on to some stuff I didn`t even realize they had done! They misspelled my name COMPLETELY and did not have the correct spelling of my address and house number, town, etc... on it! Needless to say they have been saying I have a old AT&T acct from 2003 that I owed $580 something on a few months ago. I believed them at first but have since moved where I get my paychecks sent to since I had a payment plan with them. So I looked them up on google today and lo and behold, ALL i see about them is nothing but people saying they are scam artists! So i call AT&T to find out if I ever even had a acct with them to begin with! Needless to say this company will no longer get ANY assistance from me and if they EVER call my house again, I will call my local F.B.I. and report them for harrassment immediately!
