unsolicited incoming text messages

Every time i get an incoming text message from a company I get charged $9.99 each time on my phone bill. Usually the text is somthing about answering a question of some sort, & possibly winning a prize. How do I get these incoming text messages from coming in? When they come in there is usually a code number, but no other number to call & no website to go to.
