Ever the sly conartist Mr. Nieberding cleverly succeeded in talking several lower institutions at the other end of the planet who had never heard of him into exchanging credits and classes. Unknowingly, these institutions provided Nieberding with the much-needed superficial appearance of legitimacy. The con was so successful that the business was franchised out to others who opened up "campuses" of their own in different cities all across Europe. Nieberding collected from them as well. As time passed by, however, word got out and no credible academic institution wanted anything to do with him. Eventually, he was kicked out of various academic institutions such as the A.A.C.S.B. when the number of complains about the European University grew simply to big to ignore. Nieberding and his underlings continued to make false claims that they were still the member they had once been. And as long as the money kept coming in from gullible Third World students like India and Indonesia, his operation continued to make a profit very much at the cost of those who had been tricked into sending their children there. By 1997, the Belgian school authorities had received so many complaints that the Belgian Parliament stepped in and held hearings. Xavier Nieberding immediately fled to Switzerland where he is suspected of having secretly transported large sums of money to avoid paying his full share of taxes. The multitude of complaints and grievances brought before the Parliament was so serious that the Belgian authorities decided to make use of a little known Belgian law, and as an official act of Congress, took the school away from him. Xavier Nieberding was forced to resign and the European University was given a new management. And ever since then Xavier Nieberding has become the laughing stock of the Belgian educationary system. His dream of ruling over an empire of schools shattered by an official act of Congress, Xavier Nieberding's sphere of influence is now confined to the European University's former headquarters situated at Jacob Jordaenstraat 77, Antwerp, Belgium, where the single school he allowed to run is today known as the rather insignificant "International School of Management" and also as " The International Management Institute". No serious scholar of business would want to waste their time there. As soon as the new management of his other campuses still operating under the name "European University" discovered that the personnel of the various academic institutions they had once been kicked out of had changed, they simply reapplied and reinstated a new membership with a new personnel that knew nothing of this applicant's ugly and deceitful history. Because its practice of making false and misleading statements unfortunately continues to this day, prospective students contacting the European University are advised to verify any of the claims that they make directly. Internationale Ableger betreibt die Schule derzeit in Barcelona, München und London. Staatlich akkreditiert ist sie an keinem dieser Standorte. In Barcelona entzogen ihr die katalanischen Behörden 2007 die offizielle Anerkennung, die sie während einiger Jahre genossen hatte. In Malta geriet die European University in die Schlagzeilen, weil sie eine Partnerschaft mit einer dortigen Schule unterhalten hatte, die laut der «Times of Malta» von ehemaligen Abgängern eingeklagt wurde.

While the European University in Switzerland has received little attention so far, they had to fight repeated acceptance problems abroad. International branches run by the school currenly include campuses in Barcelona, Munich and London. But governmental accedation is lacking in all of these places. In 2007, the Catalan authorities in Barcelona revoked their official recognition that the European University had enjoyed for several years. In Malta, the European University made headlines because of a partnership with a local school that, according to the "Times of Malta", was sued by a (considerable) number of former graduates.
The relevant online discussion forums are also full of criticism. A user in Degree-Info.com writes:
"The European University is basically a playground for rich kids who have more money than brains."
That the school has been in business for so long is due to their enterpreneurial (inventive) president. Craen regularly convinces celebrities from politics and business networking events to vouch for his institute. Apparently, this sometimes even result in a business opportunitiy. In 2002, Mr. Craen announced together with the former Swiss chef André Dosé a "European Aeronautical University» at the Euro-Airport in Basel. The school sought to educate (indoctriate??) "policy makers from within the aviation industry" in the Swiss-building at the airport. In this way "our people can earn an MBA from within the same institution" (at the same time), said Dosé to the "Basler Zeitung". But the project never got off the ground.
The situation regarding the alleged UNESCO Chair "for international relations and entrepreneurship», that Craen allegedly held at his school since 1999 is similar. A check with the Swiss UNESCO Commission in Berne reveals that the chair was never even active: The European University and the UNESCO Commission have had no contact whatsoever for numerous years. The school also failed to submit to UNESCO the required annual progress report on the activities of their department. UNESCO is currently reviewing all of its chairs and has let it be known that the one from the European University is about to be abolished.
Craen claims he has not benefitted from the association with the (UNESCO) chair anyways for some time now. His attention is currently focused on the 40-year anniversary of the school of which he is proud. (Craen claims that) his graduates have found good jobs which (Craen alleges) is a testament to the quality of the courses.

Das private Institut, das in Bürogebäuden in Montreux und Genf untergebracht ist, bezeichnet sich selbst als weltweit führende Wirtschaftshochschule. In der Schweiz kennt sie kaum jemand. Aufgefallen ist sie vor allem mit einer Werbemassnahme in eigener Sache: Sie vergibt grosszügig Ehrendoktorate.
Swatch-Präsidentin Nayla Hayek trägt den Dr. h. c. der European University mit Stolz. Auf der Website des Uhrenkonzerns prangt er neben ihrem Namen. Hayek hatte ein Archäologiestudium abgebrochen, bevor sie an der European University Management studierte. Ihr Sohn Marc ist ebenfalls Abgänger und Ehrendoktor der Schule. Geehrt hat die Schule auch Dosés früheren Mentor und Vorgesetzten Moritz Suter. Auf ihrem Online-Auftritt führt sie den Crossair-Gründer – mit falsch geschriebenem Nachnamen – auch als früheren Gastredner auf.
Zuletzt war es Alt-Bundesrat Adolf Ogi, der zum Ehrendoktor ernannt wurde. Er erhielt die Auszeichnung im Juni wegen seiner Verdienste für den Sport. Und zuvor war die Reihe an Steve Guerdat gewesen, dem Schweizer Olympiasieger im Springreiten: «Steve Guerdat est un docteur», titelte die «Tribune de Genève» im Mai.
Eine «University» nennt sich die in Belgien gegründete und seit 1985 in der Schweiz ansässige Business School schon lange: Dieses Jahr begeht sie ihr 40-Jahr-Jubiläum. Nun wird sie sich jedoch bald einen neuen Namen suchen müssen. Mit dem neuen Hochschulförderungsgesetz, das 2011 vom Parlament verabschiedet wurde und voraussichtlich 2015 in Kraft tritt, verschärft der Bund die Bezeichnungsregeln. Als Universitäten oder universitäre Einrichtungen dürfen dann nur noch Schulen auftreten, die in der Schweiz als solche akkreditiert sind.
Eine Schweizer Akkreditierung hat die European University jedoch nicht. Die Kriterien, die Bund und Kantone an eine Akkreditierung, an Lehre und Forschung stellen, sind hoch. Zu hoch für eine Schule, die auf ihrer Website unter anderem eine Frau als «Professorin für Marketing» aufführt, als deren einzige «akademische Erfahrung» ein Diplom an der Luzerner Journalistenschule MAZ angegeben ist.
Präsident und Kopf der European University ist seit ihren Anfangszeiten der belgisch-schweizerische Doppelbürger Dirk Craen. Er räumt auf Anfrage ein, er sei «besorgt» über die Bestimmungen des neuen Hochschulgesetzes. Lieber als über die fehlende Akkreditierung in der Schweiz spricht Craen aber über die internationalen Zertifikate der European University. Dazu gehören die unter Business Schools geläufigen Zertifikate ACBSP und IACBE.
Tatsächlich scheint die European University im profitablen Geschäft mit Business-Abschlüssen erfolgreich mitzumischen. 98 Prozent der Studenten stammen gemäss Eigenangaben aus dem Ausland. Für einen Abschluss bezahlen sie gutes Geld: 24 000 Franken kostet ein Bachelor in Business Administration, für 32 000 Franken gibt es einen Masterabschluss. 25 000 Absolventen will die Schule gemäss eigenen Abgaben bereits gehabt haben.
Während die European University in der Schweiz bisher wenig Beachtung fand, kämpfte sie im Ausland wiederholt mit Akzeptanzproblemen. Internationale Ableger betreibt die Schule derzeit in Barcelona, München und London. Staatlich akkreditiert ist sie an keinem dieser Standorte. In Barcelona entzogen ihr die katalanischen Behörden 2007 die offizielle Anerkennung, die sie während einiger Jahre genossen hatte. In Malta geriet die European University in die Schlagzeilen, weil sie eine Partnerschaft mit einer dortigen Schule unterhalten hatte, die laut der «Times of Malta» von ehemaligen Abgängern eingeklagt wurde.
Auch in einschlägigen Online-Diskussionsforen stösst man rasch auf Kritik. Ein User auf Degree-Info.com schreibt: «Die European University ist im Prinzip ein Spielplatz für reiche Kinder, die mehr Geld als Verstand haben.»
Dass die Schule so lange im Geschäft ist, verdankt sie ihrem umtriebigen Präsidenten. Regelmässig gewinnt Craen Prominenz aus Politik und Wirtschaft für Netzwerkanlässe seines Instituts. Daraus ergeben sich offenbar auch Geschäftsgelegenheiten. 2002 kündigte Craen gemeinsam mit dem früheren Swiss-Chef André Dosé eine «European Aeronautical University» am Basler Euro-Airport an. Diese sollte im Swiss-Gebäude am Flughafen «Entscheidungsträger» für die Luftfahrtindustrie ausbilden. «So können unsere Leute einen MBA gleich im eigenen Haus machen», sagte Dosé in der «Basler Zeitung». Das Projekt hob jedoch nie ab.
Ähnlich verhält es sich mit dem Unesco-Lehrstuhl «für internationale Beziehungen und Unternehmergeist», den Craen an seiner Schule seit 1999 inne hat. Eine Nachfrage bei der Schweizer Unesco-Kommission in Bern ergibt, dass der Lehrstuhl gar nie aktiv war: Zwischen der European University und der Kommission besteht seit Jahren kein Kontakt. Auch die vorgeschriebenen jährlichen Fortschrittsberichte über die Tätigkeiten des Lehrstuhls hat die Schule nicht an die Unesco eingereicht. Derzeit überprüft die Unesco alle ihre Lehrstühle, und aus dem Umfeld der Unesco-Kommission heisst es, dass jener der European University wohl abgeschafft wird.
Craen sagt, er habe ohnehin schon lange nicht mehr auf den Lehrstuhl hingewiesen. Seine Aufmerksamkeit gelte derzeit dem 40-Jahr-Jubiläum der Schule, auf das er stolz sei. Seine Absolventen, von denen die meisten gute Stellen gefunden hätten, seien ein Beweis für die Qualität der Lehrgänge.
Stellen generiert Craens Schule auf jeden Fall für die eigene Familie: Seine Söhne führen die Campus der European University in der Schweiz und Barcelona.

The article by Allan Cassidy in the Swiss newspaper "Schweiz am Sonntag" leaves no doubt that the European University is a diploma factory that uses the same celebrity-targeting tactics as Scientology to gain cheap-shot publicity for themselves. With Scientology, its Tom Cruise and John Travolta. With the European University, its people in the Industry, a considerable number of whom dropped out of legitimate academic courses.
Industry leaders and "celebrities" who allow themselves to be used for such promotion in exchange for a fake Title or Diploma do more harm than good: They allow Dirk Craen and his machinery to trick gullible and often naive students from third world countries to part with their parent's hard earned money for what is really a useless, academically valueless title or diploma not worth the paper its written on.

but you don’t fix that by paying money to a scammer that can’t help you.
I honestly can’t believe I have to post this in 2010
but after running across another LinkedIn profile that pointed to a degree mill for their MBA,
I’ve got to tell you this with all certainty:

Recruiters will catch you
What’s crazy is that this happened frequently when I was hiring.
If I didn’t recognize the name of an institution,
it took all of five seconds to figure out it was a fake.
You know how?
GOOGLE!!!
Yes, your degree mill may say they will act as your registrar,
provide transcripts and have a semi-legitimate looking web presence (well, sometimes).
What they can’t do is kill the power of Google to strike through the heart of their scam
and bring your ridiculous investment to light.
The state of Oregon even made it easier for me by providing a list of such institutions.
Glad my tax dollars are going to something helpful.
Now when I’ve called to contact a candidate about their fake online degree,
you know what usually happens?
I get hung up on.
Or I get some lecture about how accreditation is bogus
or that the educational system is a scam
or that employers have ridiculous requirements for education.
It’s the system, man.

Listen pal, just because you were scammed by some diploma mill

If you’ve got $600-1,500 burning a hole in your pocket,
use that money to arrange networking meetings for coffee and lunch.
With $600, you could have 20 coffee meetings and 10 lunches
(and that’s assuming you’re buying).
$1,500 could buy you several real courses through a public university too.
Those meetings and courses are going to be worth a lot more
than anything you’ll spend on a fake degree.

Hello dear all,
i studied in European University Barcelona for my bachelor and European university Geneva for my masters... Biggest mistake of my life... I wanted to continue my studies in London, only two universities were ready to enroll me, and ATTENTION they wanted me to study for two years for the same degree i obtained in EU and than continue with other degrees. Ive also received a confirmation that European Uni is not recognized in England.
Furthermore i wanted to try something else and decided to apply to Webster... Guess what, a private american university denied my enrollment. They said i can only start over as freshman, because European University degree is not recognized by american instituitions.
I adressed this question to administration of European University Geneva, after a while they just started ignoring my letters.
Plus i dont know if this issue was adressed in this forum (havent had the chance to read all). European university Barcelona had several law cases and probems... and there used to be a European University Lisbon, which just closed.... (i wonder why)
So, i highly recommend, to check for a different Uni.

No, it is not the only legit way to know what is going on: It is a well known and documented fact that especially the term MBA is not protected in Switzerland, which is rather unusual. A lot of people have abused this gap and set up private schools selling you some worthless degree. This is so common that a German minister had an open warning to prospective German students that carrying a non-accepted masters "title" by Swiss private schools is a crime in the EU.
Simply put:
- if nobody has ever heard of your school
- if the website is full of Swiss flags and mountain pictures
- if the school advertises "Swiss quality" instead of measurable accreditations
you are most likely going to waste your time and money. Seriously, a good school has deadlines. Yes, it is June and you are too feckin late for this years intake.
It really is common sense and if you honestly really believe that getting a private MBA title you are not allowed to carry in the EU and that does not ad any worth to your CV but rather discredits you... go ahead.

De school had al geruime tijd af te rekenen met een tanende belangstelling als gevolg van een protestcampagne opgezet door een aantal gewezen studenten van de school. Die studenten hebben ondertussen aanzienlijke schadeclaims neergelegd tegen European University.
European University was het levenswerk van Xavier Nieberding, gewezen kaderlid bij een bank die zich in de jaren zeventig profileerde als inrichter van privaat onderwijs. Nieberding poogde daarbij naam te maken als verstrekker van MBA-graden, gespecialiseerde managementopleidingen. Hij mikte daarbij in eerste instantie op kinderen van kapitaalkrachtige ouders. Daarnaast trok hij ook meer en meer buitenlandse studenten aan, onder meer uit ontwikkelingslanden.
Probleem met dat alles was dat European University niet officieel erkend was en dus geen officiële diploma's kon uitreiken. Dat belette de school niet openlijk te stellen dat haar diploma's de deur naar een gelukkige toekomst openden.
De voorbije jaren keerde dat geluk zich echter tegen de school zelf. Een aantal leerlingen klaagde publiek het feit aan dat ze met hun European University-diploma nergens terechtkonden. Wel hadden ze heel wat geld betaald om dat diploma te krijgen. Aan de spits van die protestacties stond Serge Lenglez, een ex-student die zijn bevindingen over de 'diplomafabriek' neerschreef in een boek. Door die acties verloor de school meer en meer aan geloofwaardigheid.
Tegelijkertijd liep de school in de kijker van de vreemdelingenpolitie. Bleek dat er soms nogal lichtzinnig werd omgesprongen met het verstrekken van verblijfsvergunningen. Zo dook de naam van de school ook even op in het dossier-Dutroux en wel via Anny Bouty, gewezen advocate en gewezen vriendin van Michel Nihoul.
Het nieuws dat school stopt, kwam er indirect via 'professor' Luc Van Mele. Die antwoordde op de vraag van het persagentschap Belga of het correct was dat 'rector' Gunnar Riebs van de European University 'ontslagen' was. Van Mele noemde dat bericht in die zin correct dat "Riebs ophoudt met werken voor de European, aangezien het instituut niet meer bestaat".
Enkele professoren hebben intussen beslist de activiteiten van de European University over te nemen in een nieuwe 'business school' in Brussel en Antwerpen, namelijk het International Management Institute.
Onder impuls van Serge Lenglez heeft een aantal ex-studenten ondertussen forse schadeclaims ingediend tegen de school. De gedupeerden stellen dat ze werden misleid en een nutteloos diploma kregen. Ze eisen zowel hun schoolgeld terug als gemaakte onkosten en morele schadevergoedingen. In totaal belopen die claims tientallen miljoenen frank. De juridische afwikkeling van die claims wordt voorlopig gestuit door een aantal strafrechtelijke zaken tussen een aantal betrokkenen.
Lenglez zelf heeft een bod uitgebracht op de school. Volgens Van Mele is dat bod echter zinloos geworden nu de school niet meer bestaat. Ook de gebouwen van European University staan te koop. Wat er gebeurt met de verschillende overige buitenlandse 'faculteiten' van de groep is niet helemaal duidelijk. Wellicht worden die gewoon afgebouwd. (LV)

The private Antwerp University European University stops all its activities in Belgium. The school had been dealing with a waning interest for some time as a result of a protest campaign set up by a number of former students from the school. In the meantime, those students have filed significant claims against European University.
European University was the life's work of Xavier Nieberding, a former executive at a bank that profiled itself as a private education institute in the 1970s. Nieberding tried to make a name for itself as a provider of MBA degrees, specialized management courses. He initially aimed at children of wealthy parents. He also attracted more and more foreign students, including from developing countries.
The problem with all of that was that European University was not officially recognized and therefore could not issue official diplomas. This did not prevent the school from publicly stating that its diplomas opened the door to a happy future.
In recent years, however, that happiness has turned against the school itself. A number of students publicly accused the fact that they could not get anywhere with their European University diploma. They had paid a lot of money to get that diploma. Serge Lenglez, an ex-student who wrote down his findings about the 'diploma factory' in a book, was at the head of those protest actions. As a result of these actions, the school lost more and more credibility.
At the same time, the school was in the spotlight of the aliens police. It turned out that the issuing of residence permits was sometimes rather frivolous. The name of the school also appeared in the Dutroux case, through Anny Bouty, former lawyer and former friend of Michel Nihoul.
The news that school is stopped came indirectly through 'professor' Luc Van Mele. He answered the question from the Belga news agency whether it was correct that 'rector' Gunnar Riebs of the European University was 'fired'. Van Mele called that message correct in the sense that "Riebs stops working for the European, since the institute no longer exists".
Some professors have since decided to take over the activities of the European University in a new business school in Brussels and Antwerp, namely the International Management Institute.
Under the impetus of Serge Lenglez, a number of former students have meanwhile filed substantial claims against the school. The victims state that they were misled and given a useless diploma. They claim their school fees as well as expenses and moral damages incurred. In total, these claims amount to tens of millions of francs. The legal settlement of those claims is provisionally interrupted by a number of criminal cases between a number of parties involved.
Lenglez himself has made an offer for the school. According to Van Mele, however, that bid has become meaningless now that the school no longer exists. The buildings of European University are also for sale. What happens with the various other 'faculties' abroad of the group is not entirely clear. Perhaps they will just be phased out. (LV)

Er zog auch immer mehr ausländische Studenten an, auch aus Entwicklungsländern.
Das Problem bei all dem war, dass die Europäische Universität nicht offiziell anerkannt wurde und daher keine offiziellen Diplome ausstellen konnte. Dies hinderte die Schule nicht daran, öffentlich zu erklären, dass ihre Diplome die Tür für eine glückliche Zukunft öffneten.
In den letzten Jahren hat sich dieses Glück jedoch gegen die Schule selbst gewendet. Eine Reihe von Studenten beschuldigte öffentlich, dass sie mit ihrem europäischen Universitätsdiplom nichts erreichen könnten. Sie hatten viel Geld bezahlt, um dieses Diplom zu erhalten. Serge Lenglez, ein ehemaliger Student, der seine Ergebnisse über die "Diplomfabrik" in einem Buch niedergeschrieben hat, stand an der Spitze dieser Protestaktionen. Als Folge dieser Maßnahmen verlor die Schule an Glaubwürdigkeit.
Gleichzeitig stand die Schule im Scheinwerferlicht der Fremdenpolizei. Es stellte sich heraus, dass die Ausstellung von Aufenthaltsgenehmigungen manchmal recht frivol war. Der Name der Schule erschien auch im Fall Dutroux durch Anny Bouty, die ehemalige Anwältin und ehemalige Freundin von Michel Nihoul.
Die Nachricht, dass die Schule gestoppt wird, kam indirekt durch den Professor Luc Van Mele. Er beantwortete die Frage der belgischen Nachrichtenagentur, ob es richtig sei, dass "Rektor" Gunnar Riebs von der Europäischen Universität "entlassen" wurde. Van Mele bezeichnete diese Nachricht als korrekt, in dem Sinne, dass "Riebs nicht mehr für den Europäer arbeitet, da das Institut nicht mehr existiert".
Inzwischen haben einige Professoren beschlossen, die Aktivitäten der Europäischen Universität an einer neuen Business School in Brüssel und Antwerpen, dem International Management Institute, zu übernehmen.
Unter der Leitung von Serge Lenglez haben mehrere ehemalige Schüler inzwischen erhebliche Ansprüche gegen die Schule geltend gemacht. Insgesamt belaufen sich diese Forderungen auf mehrere zehn Millionen Franken. Die rechtliche Beilegung dieser Ansprüche wird durch eine Reihe von Strafverfahren zwischen einer Reihe von Beteiligten vorläufig unterbrochen.
Lenglez selbst hat der Schule ein Angebot gemacht. Laut Van Mele ist dieses Gebot jedoch bedeutungslos geworden, seit die Schule nicht mehr existiert. Die Gebäude der Europäischen Universität stehen auch zum Verkauf. Was mit den verschiedenen anderen "Fakultäten" der Gruppe im Ausland passiert, ist nicht völlig klar.
