If you have Caller ID and you notice the words "800 Service" or "Portfolio Recovery," be prepared for a HUGE, RUDE and ANNOYING attempt to separate you from your hard-earned money. These scumbags buy lists of names that they will attach a debt to and they have gotten people to pay them millions of dollars by convincing them they "OWE" money from an EXPIRED, PAID or most likely, NONEXISTENT DEBT! This falls under the category of FRAUD, but this sleazy company will hound you day and night, at home or work, on your cell, if they can find your number or they they may call friends or relatives like your sister, brother, mom or dad and give THEM a sob story about how you "OWE" this money and try to get THEM to pay for your non-existent bill. I would LOVE to put this company and others like them out of business and the best way to do that is simple. DO NOT EVER PICK UP THE PHONE OR IF YOU DO, DON'T EVER DO NOT GIVE THESE SNAKES PERSONAL INFO, PERIOD! They might have your entire SSN, but DO NOT LISTEN, just HANG UP! No matter what DO NOT give them any recognition. By ignoring their calls, you accomplish this. HELP stomp out this type of company! YOU could very easily be on one of their MANY lists right now. They use lots of tactics: they might add a "Private Number" listing on Caller ID or even use a personal name you do not recognize on one or more of their MANY different phone numbers. Make sure you KNOW who is on the other end of the phone before you EVER answer! IF they leave a message do NOT return their call. They may make up a reason for you to want to call them! You will be happier and possibly save yourself thousands of dollars in the process if you SIMPLY  IGNORE THESE CREEPS!

Having even an accurate SSN is no proof that any alleged debt is associated with it.
Any collection agency can look up SSNs on anyone.

If you are having problems with harassment by a debt collector, contact an attorney.  You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

These creeps went after me twice for debts that weren't even mine.  They are opening a big call center in my city, and I've decided to "apply" for a job with them.  I'm going to tell them that I am thoroughly familiar with the debt-collection process and the FDCPA because I am an experienced recipient of collection calls, including two rounds of calls from them.  If they can waste my time, I can waste theirs.

DO Not ignore these calls. If you’re receiving 1 partially disclosed call and 100 calls that you find no reference or referral to but may include mortgage, credit card “debt settlement,” survey (Neilsen movies), out of area with no caller ID info. It’s because a family member, friend are being singled out  as knowing  someone. It’s impossible to negotiate with their debt collection predatory tactics but you do need to know “WHY they are calling YOUR number.” It matters not what you try to tell them or information given the problem will not go away until the who ever debt is paid. After contact and them saying “Do you know who ever”  you will know the reason for calls. Then contact the BBB Norfolk Va http://www.bbb.org/norfolk/business-reviews/d ... olk-va-51000164   and make your complaint online that includes who they’re calling for and numbers being called. They will not give up until debt is paid or they are discovered to have broken rules of conduct and business practices under FDCPA and your states rules of conduct and business practices.
