Keeps hitting with fees after the account was closed

American Express sent my debt to collectors. I am now trying to arrange the payments to the collecting company. My account with American Express has been closed and the debt transfered to a collecting agency. Yet American Express continues hitting me with over limit fees and high interest rates. The amount I owe keeps changing with every statement. I don't know what to do, and my calls to AE don't help the situation.
