Country: United States
I have been getting letters from them for years. I supposedly owe $3600 to AT&T Mobility even though I have never been with the company. I have gotten letters where it said my debt would be relieved if I paid $150!

What a joke! That alone proves it is fraud! What creditor would settle a supposed $3600 debt with $150?

Well now since that strategy didn't work, they sold my account to this Brachfeld Law Group. It's not legal action, the lawyers are just acting as debt collectors apparently.

How is a company able to get away with this? Why do honest people who have worked hard all their life to have good credit have to suffer at the hand of these crooks.

I'm in the process of talking to the law group to see what I can do to get rid of this. I just don't know what else to do. I have been ignoring it hoping it would go away, but it really won't.

Wish me luck and any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Youi have seen how this fraudulent collection game is played.

So-called "debt" is being used as an excuse to collect from not only someone who might have owed it, but anyone they might find with a similar name, or even just a similar address, as cover for their shakedown tactics.

That has been AFNI's game for years, and it is the dirty little secret of the collection industry.that this fraudulent collection is what makes it profitable.  It's a lot easier to get money from people who have it, pay their bills, and value their credit, than from identifying and billing the actual debtors.

Make sure you send a dispute and validation letter, mailed certified, to these next crooks, and make sure you mail it out within 30 days of receiving their first letter, to invoke the FDCPA prohibition against continued collection until they obtain and send validation.  If they are still coming after you for a "debt" with a company you never even did business with, then they will probably make several FDCPA violations in the process.

Also, check your 3 credit reports to see if this erroneous collection account shows up there, and dispute it through the CRAs if it does.  If the data furnisher "verifies" it instead of removing it, that is your first step for establishing a cause of action to sue for violations of FCRA.

Get an attorney, catch the next perps in an FDCPA or FCRA violation, sue them, and make it go away permanently through court judgement or  forcing a settlement..

Otherwise, the scum debt collectors will just keep passing their bogus "accounts" around, and harass you for the rest of your life.
