Signed up to have Lakeshore Energy  to provide natural gas at the variable rate. At first they were a few pennies under Consumer Energy price per thousand cubic feet. Last month(02/01/2014 thu. 02/28/2014) they were over double the Consumer Energy Price. Charging me hundreds of dollars more than Consumer Energy. This company promise me they would be the low cost supplier. Beware this company and its people are just rip off arties taking advantage of people.

Yep same here.  Rate went up to $9.99/ Mcf in February.  We've been a customer for several years and at first they were much cheaper than Consumers.  For the last 10 months it's been pennies different but now this huge spike.  Trying to switch to Consumers ASAP so we don't get another bill like this next month.  Not sure if this is a scam or just a bad choice by us.  I've heard natural gas prices have spiked nationally - so it could just be that Consumers locked into a better rate buying futures that Lakeshore didn't do.  My renewal is in April - I don't know why they would pull a scam right before I'm up for renewal.  Seems like a bad idea.

My bill has increased more than 100% each month over that last three months with Lakeshore with no notice. Been a member since 2012 to save a few pennies. But now: March 2013 was $125 this month march 2014 it's $447
No notice that rates were increasing!!!

My mother in law is 95 years of age and her contract is up in April. I take care of her and she goes to her home for while everyday. Her heat is set at 65 degree.  We assumed all is well with Lakeshore. Then in Feb.14 the bill went up over 200%. We called and had it checked per meter reading. She had to pay the $ 700.00 and Lakeshore informed that her next bill will be estimated. This month another $ 600.00 and when you call to cancel they don't answer the phone. So we complaint to the commission and send a message to LSE to call us. Hope that works since in order to get switched you need confirmation from Lakeshore.
I am sending a letter with return confirmation in hard copy and hope it will help.

We signed up for LSE with the same promises... last month was $111, this months was $365 and we use our fireplace as well. WE have been trying to get ahold of them and listen to the phone ring and ring. Today, I sent them a email and they now have 24 hours to get ahold of me or we are contacting the BBB. We were told by Michigan Gas that we cant go back to them until we talk to LSE and end our relationship with them.

Starting last fall they have been gradually  raising their rates ( I did not realize it) until the last billing. It now is more than three times the price Michigan gas utilities charges.lt has cost us almost $500.00 above the normal price, since last November . There is no way to contact them to cancel their service. They have their phone system fixed to go to static before you can talk to anyone or leave a message.Every hour I am stuck with them it costs us money we do not have , since we are surviving on social security. They are scam (or scum) artists and nobody will help. I have contacted Michigan State attorney generals office and they are looking into it.Michigan gas is not interested in getting involved.

I have called Lakeshore Energy and talked to them (yes there was static on the line) and the fella told me that gas prices did go up a lot and everyone will see this on their bill.  I called around and talked to relatives and frieds and NO ONE paid more than 5.80 for Natural Gas - only me at 9.99.  After reading all these complaints and checking ONLINE for rates in the Michigan area, even the rate with CONSUMER"S ENERGY, I am sure we have been gauged.  I am going directly to BBB to complain about this.  I want to see a refund or some agency get to these people.  This is not right - their web site advertises low prices so this can be a marketing complaint as well.  Everyone should post a complaint to the BBB - they are online.

I agree completely.  I have sent complaint to MPSC and am awaiting their reply.  We opted for alternative gas supplier Lakeshore Energy Service and their rates have gone up 200% per ccf.  My inquiries to LES have been sparse and incomplete.  What does BBB say>

I too have Lakeshore which has been ok for the past year then suddenly went from 5.85 to 9.99.  I called a couple of friends about their bills and NO ONE had a hike of any kind.  Actually, my brother has Consumers Energy (no other supplier) and his was 4.70 for the same time period!!  Go figure!!
I called Lakeshore and did not get anywhere.  Any suggestions and what to do??  Complain to the BBB maybe?  Or is Lakeshore trying to recoup any losses or what?

Same here in St. Joseph.  I have had Lakeshore Energy for about 5 years and the rates were a bit below the local Michigan Gas Utilities.  In 2013, for the entire year, my heating bill was $392.00.  The only thing I have in my small condo that is gas is the furnace.  This year, for the first 3 months I am over $400.  Last month I noticed the rates doubled and this month tripled.  Have called and called and sit on hold and when I get down to "first in line" I get a message "due to the unusually high volume of calls we are unable to take your call at this time".  I, too, am a retiree, with an 88 year old mother that I care for in my home.  I am at a loss, as well, as to what to do.  Perhaps I will contact the Attorney General's office as someone else suggested.

HOW TO GET YOUR GAS SWITCHED BACK TO CONSUMER'S ENERGY/ OR YOUR LOCAL UTILITY !!!  Hi all-- I am a victim just like you.  I saved a few cents over the years.  2 or so years ago, Lakeshore was a good deal.  Now I just got rocked like all of you $ 9.99 per 100 cubic feet-- when Consumer's cost was under $ 5 !!!   I called Lakeshore just like all of you, e-mailed, on hold on the phone forever.  No response, no one ever contacted me back.  What is also terrible is that Consumers could NOT switch me back without Lakeshores permission !!!  What a dillema !!  Then I came up with a brilliant idea:  I called Consumers, told them I needed to cancel the account in my name, and put it in my wife's name.  I was "getting divorced !!"  So-- I cancelled the account in my name-- effectively cancelling Lakeshore.  My wife opened her new "divorced wife"  ha ha account-- and we were good to go.  For that matter, when you call to do this, give Consumers your meter reading-- with a little "adjustment"  I gave my meter reading just a little lower than it actually was-- about 20 cubic feet.  Saved $ 20 or so from their rip-off pricing.  I am an honest person, but what Lakeshore did was criminal.  So I took matters into my own hands.  Just got the newest bill.  $ 136.  Gas is .47 cents per hundred.  I would have paid Lakeshore over $ 80 more on just this current bill this month !  Big mistake to go with them.  I did some very rough math.  The few bucks that I saved with Lakeshore over the past 2 years was totally negated and then some in 1 to 2 months. !!  Big mistake-- and lesson learned !!  Good Luck to all.

I,too, learned a lesson, but I just e-mailed LES and asked to cancel my contract after mpsc said nothing could be done.  Let's hope a lot of others do also.

    Got out just in time
My contract expired in March 2013.  I was going from the month to month and didn't know it, I thought I was on a 2 year contract, but I was getting the managed price anyways of around 47-49 cents per CCF.  I was paying close attention their prices every month they were typically 2 cents cheaper or 2 cents more expensive than DTE.   The glory days of them being tens of cents more cheaper than DTE were obviously at an end I was not saving much money anymore, but was placing myself at risk.   Around November I noticed the managed price plan was now saying NYMEX plus 7 cents.

I knew then that the jig was up, and Lakeshore was simply going to sell at the raw commodities rate plus a large markup and I was unlikely to ever save any money again.  In December they upped the price into the 50-60 cent range even though managed price plan was still in the 47-49 cent range.  I called them to ask about the discrepancy. They told my contract was up and I was "at the mercy of the market".   I cancelled my service on the spot and requested to return to DTE.   I was able to get back on DTE by the January billing. *Phew*

I dodged a really big bullet on that one and saved myself about 600 dollars by doing that, because I would have been screwed hard if I decided to stay with Lakeshore.

Now Lakeshore Energy is deliberately being elusive by no longer publishing their current rates, nor do they continue to offer a comparison of their rate history with DTE's.

My advise is to steer clear from all alternative gas providers for the foreseeable future.   You typically will pay more with an alternate gas provider.  Why?  Because regulated gas utilities do not make a profit off the GCR (the price of natural gas commodity).  They are regulated to have a certain profit based on the customer charge and the gas distribution charge, both of which you pay anyways even with an alternate gas provider.   With an alternate gas provider, they charge roughly the commodity rate plus a markup for themselves.  In other words you are paying an additional middle man for your gas, a middle man whom has no regulations imposed by the state utility commission limiting their profits.  With the phase out of coal power plants and rising exports, the price of natural gas is only going to get more turbulent as the case with the price spikes this past winter.

Now, how did people actually save money with Lakeshore Energy for so many years?   It's because DTE likely got themselves caught themselves in a bad long term natural gas contract which missed out on the glut of natural gas caused by fracking and the economic collapse of 2009 which caused their prices much higher than the commodity rates for a period of years.   It is most likely a white elephant event and is unlikely to reoccur any time soon.

Have been reading all of these. I had signed on to Lakeshore Energy a few years back to save $$'s. Over time I learned that I was only saving a few dollars, actually somewhere around $5./mo. So when I saw that they were going to be harranging me on the phone all the time to renew my contact with them, I never renewed it. I couldn't see micro-managing my utility account for a $5./mo saving.

When my Gas bill spiked this past winter, I initially thought that it was due to a severely cold winter. But when I was on the phone with MI Gas, I learned that my $450.+ a month bill was not due to the extremely cold winter, but because I was still being billed by Lakeshore Energy on a month-to-month basis at a rate of $1.29/CFF while MI Gas rates were at only .42/CFF. Meaning essentially that I was still being billed by Lakeshore Energy at a rate 307% higher than MI Gas, somewhere around $700. - $1000. more than I would have paid with Michigan Gas.

Was really surprised to learn that I was still being billed by Lakeshore Energy when I had not renewed any contract with them. After speaking with their customer service (very long hold times on the phone), I learned that they would not be refunding me any part of my bill, because I had not canceled my initial contract with them in writing, something I was completed unaware that I had to do.

So, not only price gouging, but deceptive and misleading business practices. Bottom line, no idea I was still with Lakeshore Energy. My billing was from Michigan Gas. Needless to say, I am no longer with Lakeshore Energy. Think I will follow up with your ideas to contact the Michigan Public Service Commission. Would like to know if there is any class action going on, because have heard that there are literally thousands of Lakeshore Energy customers disputing their bills.

I also am from St. Joseph.  Same thing happened to us.  I complained to MPSC and they replied they could do nothing...LES is unregulated and we had a contract with them.  In my opinion, LES is a very unethical company.  We have cancelled our contract.  It will probably cost us, but I will not do business with a company I do not trust.  If there is a class action suit, I would certainly join, but there doesn't seem to be much public outcry about this outrageous practice of advertising lower prices and then raising them almost 300% during the coldest months of the year

DO NOT BUY NATURAL GAS FROM LAKESHORE ENERGY!
I have purchased Natural gas from Lakeshore Energy for several years. I have not had a problem until Last month (February) I was charged at a rate of $.553 per CCF in January. In February I was charged $.781 per CCF. I cancelled my contract with Lakeshore on 2-26-14. I was charged $1.29 per CCF By Lakeshore Energy for March, my last month with them. This amounts to an outrageous 150% price increase in 3 months. As of today I am now back with Michigan Gas Utilities, their current rate is $.42 per CCF. This is 1/3 of the exuberant Lakeshore Energy price. I contacted the Michigan Public Service Commission and was referred to the Michigan Attorney General. The Michigan Attorney General's office would not help me. I am a retired and cannot afford this price gouging.
