To Whom It May Concern:
My family and I are placing a complaint against a Spirit Airline check-in clerk only known to us as Susan (short blond hair).

On Sunday afternoon, March 16, 2014 my husband Dave, son Brett, daughter-in-law Karen, and I checked in for Flight NK341, Atlantic City (AC), NJ to Tampa, FL.  We'd been on a mini vacation in "AC" for 3 days having flown from Tampa, FL on March 13, 2014, Confirmation #Y8VZFZ.  This part of our flight was unremarkable, however, trying to return home was much less than we expected.

First the Spirit kiosk at the Atlantic City Airport only dispensed 3 out of our 4 boarding tickets.  A very nice woman guided us to the check-in desk.  We were stopped in our approach.  Susan immediately stated to  me Dave's backpack was not flying to Tampa.  Susan's demeanor took us by surprise.  We felt Susan was a little more assertive than she needed to be.  The last thing we would ever be is confrontational, but I asked to please explain as we'd encountered no issue with this backpack on the flight from Tampa, FL to Atlantic City, NJ.  Susan insisted the backpack was not flying out.  Dave put the backpack inside your luggage requirement box, it fit.  Susan stated she didn't care if it fit or not, that bag was not flying to Tampa on "my plane".  Susan advised us we needed to pay a charge of $50.  Dave stated, "But it fits."  Susan refused to measure the bag, just kept reiterating that this bag was not going to Tampa with us.

We took our boarding pass and decided to think about how we were going to do this.  This was a brand new backpack and I hated to have to throw it away, but it wasn't worth $50 to fly it.  We all began to walk toward our gate.  We decided to transfer the clothing in the backpack to a plastic bag.  When I turned to my husband and kids behind me I observed Susan walking quite briskly toward us.  I told my kids not to turn around, but did advise them Susan was walking our way.

We kept walking toward seating at our gate.  Susan briskly walked alongside me.  I could not believe she was doing this,  then Susan stepped right in front of me, turned around and was now walking backwards facing me.  She smirked as she told me she was going to be working the boarding desk, that she'd told me before the backpack was not going on "my plane", stated to me "You should have paid the $50 downstairs, now I'm going to be charging you $100!"   I could not believe she was treating me like she was, just so aggressive!  I am 70 years-old...what did I do to deserve this treatment?  Susan could have made me fall by her behavior of walking up alongside of me, then stepping right in front of me.  My daughter-in-law said, "Boy she's got it out for you and you didn't even do anything!"  I followed Spirit rules.  The backpack fit in your regulation luggage box.  I transferred the 2 pairs of shorts, underwear, and a couple of T-shirts into a plastic bag we had sandwiches in.  My husband went into the men's room, he's 73 year's old, put on his jeans and we stuck those shorts into a bag my son had with him.

It is not surprising I became quite upset.  I began to wonder what else was Susan going to do to us/me?  Was she going to now ban a tote bag we had, which was the same size as the backpack?  I became warm, removed my pullover and unknowingly pulled out one of my Black Hills tri-gold earrings, a gift to me from my children, costing $309.00.  I know I had it entering the airport.  In my stress I forgot to remove my iPad electric cord from the zippered pouch inside the bag, not to mention having to toss a brand new backpack.

I looked at my daughter-in-law who was visibly shaken.  I asked her if she was ok.  She shook her head no and replied, "You know I have a fear of flying and this woman just made me worse...what the heck is she going to do next?"

How does Spirit justify mistreating  people like this?  And a senior citizen!

My son Brett is a Spirit member.  Would you fly Spirit again if you were treated as we were?

Thank you.

P.S.  This letter was signed by my entire family and faxed to Spirit Airlines...they are working on my complaint.
