My wife and I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental in May 2016. It was a four day rental from Midway Airport. Our flight got in late and we were in a hurry to get to Lansing, Illinois where we had rented a room for the night. The agent tried to sell me insurance I didn't need (my policy and my credit card cover me), and then told me that I should take plan to return the car with any amount of fuel since their gas price was $2.79 and outside on the street the price was higher. When I drove away from the airport, the first filling station I passed was priced at $2.65. When I returned the car, I filled the tank up about a quarter mile from the rental return facility and they marked the recept as returned with a full tank of gas and then charged me $39,60 for fuel. I called them when I got home and the "graciously" removed the charge as a "first-time gesture." At the time of the rental, I was also told I would need to use the "Toll Charge" device since most toll booths wouldn't accept anything except the exact amount in coins and I couldn't get to Lansing, Illinois without going through toll booths. I set my GPS for the address of my hotel and didn't encounter even one toll on that drive to the hotel. The next morning, we drove back roads to avoid using the Indiana Toll Road. On our return trip to Midway, we did use the Indiana Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway as our route. I paid the toll for the Indiana Toll Road with a credit card and used the device to pay the tolls on the Skyway since I didn't have enough cash in coins to pay exact amounts. When I checked the receipt, they had charged me $43.96 for the tolls. When I rented the caar, I was not told that I would be paying a per day fee for the device and even though I only opened the device and used in on one of the four days of my rental, I was charged for four days. As near as I could remember, the Skyway probably tolls amounted to less than $6.00. When I inquired about that, Thrifty forwarded my call to another company that provides and takes care of these toll reader devices. They told me that if I pressed this issue, they would charge me a $15 "administrative fee" for each toll inquiry (some of the tolls were as little as fifty cents) and that I would probably pay more than the $43.96 in administrative fees if I requested a refund. Don't rent a car from Thrifty Car Rental at Chicago Midway if you expect honesty and integrity.
