My Chase Credit Card was charged illegally on 12/15/2007 by smartemarket.com for $4.95. I rarely use this credit card (no transaction for the past three months) and this is the card connected to my paypal account. I strongly suspect that the owners of www.smartemarket.com are phishing credit cards off of paypal.com!

    It is part of this "operation", used to run large numbers of charges against stolen credit cards under multiple names to hide the activity from fraud detection.  It appears from complaint rates on other sites that they have substantially ramped up their activites, perhaps to take advantage of the high level of charges during the Christmas season.  "Merry Christmas"

    The report here indicated that it appears they are stealing large volumes of credit card data from some source, not necessarily containing just recently used card data as would usually be the case with a merchant hack, but more likely higher up the payment processing chain since there was a mix of recently used and dormant cards being charged.

    My MasterCard was charged illegally on 12/26/2007 by smartemarket.com for $4.95. I also rarely use this credit card and this is the card connected to my paypal account which ebay and paypal have had on "hold" for months for no good reason. I wonder if the owners of www.smartemarket.com and paypal are phishing together!

    I just found a charge of $6.95 on my card from smartemarket.com. I don't know how they got my #, it is not the card I use for my paypal acct.

    I just yesterday received an e-mail alert from my Bank of America about a non cardswipe (one made online or by phone or mail) charge to my account for $4.95 from Smarte Market Inc. This was on a very active account but I don't use paypal. My bank will remove it once it clears, it was still pending. I got a recording when I tried to call the phone number for Smarte.

    Me Too!  An unauthorized "Smartemarket" charge of $4.95 posted o 1-7-08. Also got a heavily accented voice recording on their number. My card IS on Paypal and Ebay. Also used it occasionally internet shopping. Hey, I DID fax my card info recently to a business in New York, anybody else?????

    Just noticed a charge from this company on 1-8-08 On the phone with Chase and changing all my Visa numbers. Where is the FBI?

    I just noticed the same thing on my Chase MC.  $4.95 from a transaction on 1-8-07.  My card is not linked to PayPal, but I do purchase quite a few things online.

    Just had @ $4.95 charge to my Visa on 1/04/08. I don't have anyhting linked to PayPal.

    Mine was charged today and then quickly reversed. What sites have you used online to purchase from recently? I never bought anything online with this card until this weekend and I went to three sites.

    If you call your credit card company they can file a complaint against the company.

    I just noticed the $4.95 charge pending on my Visa debit card. It is linked to my paypal account but just last week I purchased a credit report from Equifax and I have read others believe it may be linked to Equifax. I will be calling my bank tomorrow.

    I just noticed this charge last night.  It is a debit and belongs to spouse, he has purchased one thing on line with this card and that was in November and it was flowers.  He has only ever used this card for gas or groceries other than that.  Does not shop online (less flowers once) has never given number out over the phone.  This 4.95 charge is bogus and being taken care of but still annoying.  We have two fire walls and monitor all of our cards.  I only purchase on line through Citicard as it will generate a one time number for internet purchases so that it cannot be used by someone else.

    I'm a member of this fast growing club!  I emailed them, and they immediately promised to credit my account.  But, I want to know how they got my number.    And, I wonder how many out there aren't noticing this!
    We can't just be happy with getting our $4.95 back....need to do more!
    I'm filling out an online complaint form at NYS Attorney General's office.

    I just noticed a withdraw for a purchase made with my visa debit card at Smartemarket.com.  I have no idea who this is but I did not purchase the ebooks they sell.  I went to their website and there is no real address etc.  I notified my bank, tried contacting the company etc.  Needless to say I have to close the card down and I am hopeful the bank will help with getting this resolved.  How can the FBI not be involved I found so many victims of this theft...

    I discovered this on my account and have canceled my debit card and complained to my bank and they will follow up on it.

    I've now had $4.95 taken from me on two different occasions from smartemarket.  I get a recording when calling the company directly so I'll have to go through my bank to get my money back again!!
