I was trying to reach my insurance company on my computer and I dialed the number listed on the web site.  I was transferred immediately to this person who said 'new department' Central Rewards and offered a $200.00 card for gas and some other memberships if I will pay now only 2.99 from my account.  I confirmed all information from my account and gave my name, phone number and mailing address.  But then I got a bad feeling and said that I do not want to proceed further.  They did not let me do it because they said I will be charged full amount of membership immediately because they had my charge account number, etc.

Please post the website URL, and the phone number you obtained from that site.

This is a fraudulent marketing operation selling fake "gas rebate" offers.

Websites in similar scams have had a number of well-known national trademark logos on it, creating the appearance that they had some "affiliation" with those companies.  They might be even more blatantly concocting a fake website to steer victims to their number.

It is a common tactic with scams to steal the credibility of other recognized and trusted companies.  They may have spiked their websites with such names to get Google to bring them up when you searched on your insurance company.  They continued the deception when you called by playing along with the misperception they had already created.

Any account number they got out of you was through deception, so the charges are fraudulent.  In addition, the value of the "product" is typically misrepresented, with the actual terms to get any money back deceptively or only partly disclosed.  It's a scam.

Doesn't matter what they claim, or whether they want to give you back your money.  It is fraud, so you can reverse the charges on that basis.  You don't do so by asking nicely.

Dispute their fraudulent charges through your bank, and block the account or card number to prevent additional fraud.  Follow up with a written dispute or fraud affidavit sent to your bank's dispute address.  Your bank can reverse fraudulent or unauthorized charges if you dispute within 60 days of the statement date of the statement showing the disputed charges.

File fraud complaints with FTC, your state Attorney General, and at www.ic3.gov

In addition, contact your insurance company to notify them that a scammer is using a fraudulent website to scam their customers.
