Home Phone Connect

I wanted to switch to Verizon for my landline to consolidate my cell phones/home phone all on one plan. I was given the Home Phone Connect device and told that A) I could retain my regular old home phone number and B) It would "probably" work fine in my home even though I informed them that I have no cell phone reception at my residence (which is why I still even have a land line!). When I got home I plugged the device in and tried to activate it following the instructions and dialing the port number to change the temporary phone # to my usual phone #. The instructions told me this would take "10 business days" and to reinstall my old phone jack & service so I could continue receiving calls to my old phone # until I got an email saying my number had been imported to the device. This change never occurred, I never received an email; and in trying the Home Phone Connect device for outgoing calls, I noticed that the quality of reception is fuzzy and has static.  When I went back to the Verizon store I was informed I couldn't return it because the 14-day return period had expired. I think a 14-day trial period is ludicrous - given that you can't even test it for the 10 business days required to activate your regular phone number!  I called Verizon Customer Support who said they could try again to import my regular #; and if after that, the quality of sound was unsatisfactory, they would run "Troubleshooting". However, in order to Troubleshoot, I'll need to have access to a phone line other than the land line the device will be plugged into - but of course I have NO CELL PHONE reception at my house! They have no other solution to try to troubleshoot it to make the quality satisfactory except that I could try to have a family member or friend come over to use their cell phone - but NO ONE's cell phone works at my house. They have no other solution, but still REFUSE to accept the device in return without me forfeiting the $175 early termination penalty. I cannot believe that Verizon doesn't stand behind their products & quality better!
