My wife and I were approached by a Direct TV salesman at our house. He talked her into buying HD TV. He gave us an order slip and said he'd be back today between 4 and 6. He then showed up at my work and made me pay for it on the spot. He never came to my house, and called saying they don't do dish anymore, and the new thing isn't yet on the trucks and he can come by next week to do it. I'm furious and pretty sure this is a scam.

Looks like door to door sales fraud or bait and switch fraud.

The correct answer when he showed up at your work was "no sale, get lost", and maybe even "stay away from my wife or I'll beat the sh*t out of you".  At that point, (and still even now) he had not done anything, and had no legitimate claim for payment for a job not yet completed.

Sounds llike he knew he couldn't even deliver what he was selling, and knew it at the time he was selling it and getting paid for it.

Might also have violated city business license or door-to-door sales ordinances.
Contact your local District Attorney's Consumer Protection unit.

If you paid by credit card, debit card, or check, you might want to file a fraud dispute through your bank.
