Typically, they call and claim "there's a complaint", or "we're trying to locate you to serve papers", pretending there's some "lawsuit" or "you're being prosecuted", trying to panic people into handing over money without any proof the "debt" even exists or is owed to them. They'll use skip-tracing to leave messages with coworkers or relatives, to pretend they're trying to "locate" targets they already have a phone number on. They may even pull credit reports and use information on old addresses or some old closed bank or credit card account to concoct some alleged "old debt". They NEVER provide verification documentation of the alleged "debt", only sending some email "settlement offer" which proves nothing at all.
