As you have discovered after the fact, timeshares are a complete scam. Unless you like visiting the same place year after year after year for every year for the rest of your life, they are a terrible investment. You have to pay monthly maintenance costs and other owners may damage the unit. You may want to upgrade and other owners don't want to pay. It's almost always less expensive to pay for a hotel when you visit. However, there are many solutions regarding timeshares, but most of them are not viable. Some of these solutions are:

    1. Renting the timeshare
    2. Put it up for sale
    3. Inherit the timeshare
    4. Transfer the timeshare
    5. Just dropping it
    6. Give it back to the resort
    7. Donate it
    8. Cancel the contract

You can see more details about each of these options if you go to my source.
REMEMBER: Never pay large upfront fees to get rid of your timeshare, if you do, you will be scammed. Here you will find more information about unwanted timeshares and how to get rid of them:
