After asking me to pay $2.97 to get a list of sites to check out, I was informed that I would be billed a aditional $54.?? dollars unless I canceled.  I can't get back in to cancel.  I paid with a gift card that I have no way of contacting like a credit company to refuse service.
What do I do?

Cramming scams are set up to drain your account with monthly charges while they put barriers in the way of cancelling, such as unanswered cancellation phone numbers, or just ignoring your request.  In this case, if you have no way to cancel or block the gift card and have a new one reissued for the remaining value, you may be out of luck, but at least that is all they can take.

You should, however, watch out for shady "debt collectors" calling demanding additional payments on this "account" that you "can't cancel".  If you get such calls, file fraud complaints against them with FTC, and your state Attorney General.

Normally you would dispute fraudulent charges immediately through your bank, under FRB Reg. E, and close your account due to fraud to prevent additional fraudulent charges.  Your bank can reverse fraudulent charges showing on statements dated up to 60 days earlier than your original date of dispute.

You would then follow up to your bank dispute with a written dispute or fraud affidavit sent to your bank's dispute address, and file a fraud and theft complaint with your local police, FTC, your state Attorney General, and at www.ic3.gov.
