It is a temporary use number. You can download an app to assign these types of numbers to your phone. Normally used by ex girlfriends and others with nefarious motives.

They called me and said they were from the US government and that I had earned USD$ 9.200,00 of tax return just because I am a foreigner (which they had basic information about me) , they gave me a money confirmation ID and a phone number to call, out of  curiosity, I called and the attendant told me to go to the Dollar General buy a gift card in the amount of $ 230.00 and refer to a bank that I do not remember the name, and after that they would call me again and give me another money confirmation ID for me to go to my Bank And withdraw those $ 9.200,00 plus the $ 230.00 gift card. PS: they are all foreigners, I can tell by their accent.

I also just received a call from 202-720-2545 claiming he was from the US Government in Washington DC. This man with an Indian accent kept repeating how I was selected to receive a $7,000 grant for always paying my taxes and bills on time. He gave me a confirmation number and a second number to call to release my funds via Westwrn Umuon or via direct deposit into my bank account. #scam

Called me and hung up. Searched this site and found the above, we need to shut these folks down by any means possible. Find out where the wire transfers are sent and who picked up. Travel there and shut that [***] down in a proper way, and take all tech onsite and destroy it. Just called again while I am typing...UGH ok so maybe some torture and dismemberment...

Has anyone followed through, past the part where you put money on a card. Which is supposed to be a confirmation number to get the cash released .  If it's a scan, what do they actually get

It is a scam, and what they get out of it is your money, of course.
They want you to buy a gift card (iTunes, Amazon, Vanilla, Green Dot, etc.).  The so-called "confirmation number" is the PIN number on the back of the gift card that you scratch off to reveal.  Give the scammer that number, and it's just like giving him cash, and you can't get a chargeback or refund!
