I just received a phone call from these people.  THey told me that I had registered online to recieve a $1000 gift certificate to shop online at this store thing. One don't remember registering.  I kept asking what the catch was and the lady said nothing.  I just neeeded to answer a few questions and pay $3.50 shipping and handeing for six magazines that they were going to send me.  I asked well how do I pay that shipping and handling.  The lady said well with you credit card or debit card.  I said I am not comfortable with giving that information and will not.  She said well have a nice day bye.  I figured from the begining it was a scam.  I looked up online and sure enough it is someone doing scams so beware!!

Number is reported to be "Reading America", known to be running a fraudulent telemarketing "magazine subscription" scam.

Numerous complaints indicate a pattern of fraudulent telemarketing with  promises and claims used to get consumers to divulge credit card or bank account numbers, after which they change the "terms" of their "offer" and start charging amounts not disclose or agreed to up front, claiming "no cancellation", whic also is not disclosed up front.  Basically "bait and switch" AFTER getting account billing information, with fraudulent charges for subscriptions at many times publishers rates, and use of threats to block consumer disputes.  The "shopping spree" "for shipping and handling" is one such tactic used to get consumers to disclose account information.

Pretty typical for this type of scam.

    BBB report, rated "D+":

Just had a call from them... stating we have won a $100 Gift Card from Walmart, but we have never seen it... They just asked me to confirm my Address and Phone number and asked me if I had a Credit/debit card, we told no, we have none of them... So they got really "cold" and told me I would receive the gift in the mail and then He hung up...

After a few days, we haven't received the Gift card, so I called the number back and they told me I wasn't the winner of a 100 dollar but 1000 dollars gift certificate from some website online...  All I had to do was to agree in receiving some magazines from about 4 dollars a week, I said NO! Called them back later asking them to DELETE our names from their databases! SCAMMERS!

I just received the same call bout five minute's ago. The lady Told me I had been selected to take a short survey, and for my time I would be "Awarded" with several magazine subscription's for free and a $1,000.00 shopping spree so I stayed on the phone to see what the catch was. The survey question's where all like 1.) Do you have a credit card?  2.)Since you don't have a credit card, do you have a debit card? 3.)What's The logo on you're debit card i.e. Visa? Mastercard?  4.)What is your home address? What kinda survey is that? LOL! That's not obvious at all! She said that all I had to do was "help cover" some of the shipping cost for the magazine's so that the publisher isn't out so much money. I said; well, If your publisher's are in such need of a measly $3.95 for "FREE" Magazine's then how the HELL are they gonna be able to afford to give me a "free" $1,000.00 shopping spree? And instead of giving me that $1,000.00 shopping spree, which apparently you really can't afford to give out anyway, you just use that $1,000.00 to cover the $3.95 and just send me the magazine's! apparently that wasn't an option. She got upset and insulted my intelegence saying that any person with any wit about them wouldn't pass up a $1,000.00 shopping spree over such small change! I replied with, Anyone with any bit of COMMON SENSE wouldn't fall for such a poor scam in the first place!!!  She tried to assure me that it wasn't a scam, and I asked her to hold on for just a moment while I put there companies name into google, to see what other's have had to say about their company and the shopping spree. When she heard my typing she hung up! Out of the info I gathered up, There is no shopping spree, just an entry into a "contest" to "maybe" win a shopping spree, and after the first Month of the weekly $3.95 charge, it went up to full price for all 6 magazines, and Processing fee's, handling fee's, shipping fee's etc...What they don't tell you is that it's a trial period at $3.95 for ONE MONTH. Then you are charged MORE THAT DOUBLE what you would have if you just would have went to each individual magazine and subscribed to them yourself! SO STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCAM!!!!
