OK, so after reading these reviews, I'm depressed. My wife and I bought this matching set of WP Duets thinking, hey, it's a Whirlpool, its got to be good, the washer and dryer we replaced were 20+ year old Whirlpools, and they still worked, go figure. But, we bought the 5 year warranty from Lowes just to be safe cause you never know and if your going to spend $2,000+ on a digitally controlled, temp sensitive, motorized, water handling machine you best protect you're investment cause that's what it should be. What other machine in your life has all of those functions that you wouldn't buy with out a warranty? A car! Anyways, our washer is starting to have an impartial appetite for clothing, and at just two years old, we've lost a donzen peices of clothing to this loud tazmanian devil of a washer. I came home one day and the washer had shook is way up stairs... You've got to see a little humor in all the havoc these machines have caused us. So on to a SOLUTION! First you need to look at that very grippy grey rubber baffel/gasket thing at the front of the drum which serves as your water tight interface between your spinning drum and stationary washer and door. Now jam some clothes in there...I mean do a load of laundry, and watch what happens, yes you should try and watch the whole wash cycle, its kind of interesting. Perhaps you've noticed some dark colored streaky residue on your freshly washed clothes, that's rubber! It's like someone's done a burnout on your best workshirt. It wipes off and won't stain, thats a near miss, you're shirt fought back and didn't get sucked all the way in. It didn't get all twisted up and dragged along that rubber gasket at 600 RPMs for 12 minutes. Lucky Shirt! So where am I going with all this nonsense? I'll be damned if I'm just gonna give up and buy another brand of washer, and no, its really not broken, not yet. All that vibration I mentioned will eventually put that flexible rubber gasket to the test and kill it. In the meantime its still eating your clothes, there is too much friction between your spinning clothes and that grippy gasket is the culprit when there is no water during the spin cycle in there to keep things slipping along. If you look closely, you'll notice streaking or abrasion on the gasket esp. close to the drum along the hard part. Now I know we shouldn't have to perform routine maintenance on out washers, but I've experimented with lubricating this gasket, mostly along the hard rubber ring nearest the metal drum with a silicone based water proof lubricant. Don't use one with VOCs as that may tarnish your clothing and cause premature damage to the rubber. It may need to be applied between every wash, what a pain! But our incidents have gone down. Apply a thin layer with your finger around the entire ring. Cover the whole surface if you feel the need and in the groove down inside. This is my idea and it worked for me, it's not perfect and you don't have to do it, so don't come crying to me when it doesn't work or try and hold me liable for any damages caused, you either Whirlpool! I'm sure this will void your warranty.
