These people have been emailing me over the past couple of years (random dates.) The most recent was today about 5 hours ago. They claim that I received a payday loan and have failed to pay it back. (Ive never received any type of loan for anything. Ever.) Somehow they have my social security number, which is concerning. Is there anything I can do to prevent future harassment?

Same thing is happening to me. Email comes with your S.S.N and I am extremely concerned that they may use it.

Same thing happening to me...told them to send it in the US mail...of course they won't be able to because I am sure they are out of the country.  The poorly phased email is a sure sign they are foreign.

You can file a fraud alert..

Contact any of the 3 credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) to notify them of identity theft and possible fraud.
They will place a fraud alert on your credit files (and notify the other 2 to do the same). This notifies creditors that might be opening accounts using your identity information to contact you directly to verify if the request of credit is legitimate.  It also entitles you to a free credit report from each of the CRAs (entirely separate from the free annual reports through annualcreditreport.com), so you can check for fraudulent activity.
