Verizon Wireless Fraud Department

On 2/23 I received a notice from my identity protection company that Verizon Wireless had initiated a credit check on me on 2/21.  I contacted them because I had not had any dealings with Verizon.  They put a fraud alert out and told me to contact Verizon Fraud Department to find out what was going on.  I seems someone had purchased service for 4 phones using my name/address/ssn etc and picked them up at a Verizon office 350 miles from my home in another state.  When I told them I did not order any service and they should put a stop on the account they told me I would have to file a fraud report.  So I go to their website and start the process only to find out they want a police report.  By now it is 5 PM and there is no one at the local police station so I had to wait until the next day.  Went to file my report and the officer tells me he won't be able to give me a copy until it is logged and put in the computer so I can't get the fraud report filed and the account is still open.  What kind of idiot company allows someone to order equipment and pick it up 300 miles away from the billing address.

    What kind of idiot company?

One that figures they'll just sell off their fraudulent accounts anyway, and they've built so much into the "termination fee" that there's some sleazy collection agency that will buy it from them on the chance they can squeeze money out of id theft victims and make a business of it.  It's only a "loss" if the wholesale phone cost exceeds the average discounted profit from selling the "bad debt".

get a copy of the report, and be prepared to challenge this fraudulent "account" if some collection agency places it on your credit report.  FCRA/FACTA gives you the right to do that, and allows you to sue the data furnisher, whether Verizon or a collection agency, if they fail to remove a fraudulent account that you substantiate with a police id theft report.  Should you need a consumer attorney, you can find one in your state through www.naca.net
