Hello everyone:

Beware of the rental car companies overseas if you are a traveller like me. I am describing about a recent experience I had in London, UK. I booked a car from EuropCar UK website and paid almost week in advance for the type of car I needed as I was travelling with my family and had 2 large suitcases. When I went to receive the car, they told me their system shows I had reserved an Economy (Pinto to be exact). They were trying to squeeze my blood in paying 30GBP extra a day + 10GBP for GPS and other non-sense taxes. I fought with them for half hour to convince them to give me the car I booked for the price I paid already. I was tired of the whole situation and forgot to note small scuff marks on the rear bumper and tire rims. When I returned the car, they showed those scuff marks and asked me to sign the paper. I remembered I never parked in a crowded place and was mostly driving outside of London crowded city. They try to catch you with some claim or the other as every rental car does. I request you to be aware of all these scam artists overseas.

Worst Company, also charged me for a parking ticket where I was parked in a loading bay submitted receipts and company details still asked me to pay £100 plus admin costs, I said I am not liable so they said if I dont pay then I will be banned from Eurpcar Hire, meaning I will not be able to book anymore so I went to Alamo to check if that was correct and yes, I cant book from europcar and Alamo as they are the same company.
      Europcar worst Car Rental Company.

SCAM! I got charged the double. AVOID EUROPCAR!

I booked a car for 110£ for 5 days. At the airport these guys charged me anothe 150£ for a COMPULSORY insurance.

Even then they were LYING to me about the price per day, saying its 25/day.
Only when I paid I realized that it was actually 29/day, as the seller informed me the prices he told me didn't include VAT.
THIS IS A THIEVERY PRACTICE ON CORPORATIONAL POLICY LEVEL.

I AM DISGUSTED BY THIS COMPANY.

I am having exactly the same problem. I think they scam people. We hired a car for one day. When we took it back the lady said it was fine and we left .. We then got charged the 250 pounds bc of damage!!! We did not damage that car. They never got us to sign anything on return. When we spoke to them they said it was damaged but how do we know who drove the car after !!!'

What are you going to do? This is robbery.

Call your bank. I had the same problem and the bank got my money back. They have 45 days to dispute it but don't follow up on at as they know they won't win.

There is no doubt that this company resort to dubious practices, the tyre scam is a favorite one, After suffering at their hands to the tune of 150GBP I did a little research and found numerous people who had been scammed by Eurocar. As they know its almost impossible to prove and carry on doing it. One ex employee confirmed that it is common practice throughout the company. Eurocar are a disgrace, dont touch them!

Hi I too have been scammed by Europcar UK

I booked and paid in full for 3 weeks rental through an online website.  When I returned the car I was informed that there was a balance of £120  which had been taken off my card, I immediately complained as I had paid in full, I was informed that the extra money was for ‘Tyre & Windscreen cover’,  I did not ask for this and was never informed that this had been added to my account.  The lady at the returns desk pointed out that I had initialed next to  that part on the rental agreement.  However when I checked out the car the lady walked me round it to check for damage then handed me the clipboard and said “sign here and initial here”.  I had just travelled for 33 hours and did not bother looking at what I was initialing.  Surely they cannot just con weary travelers into paying for things they did not ask for.  I did not take out the excess insurance cover so why would I agree to pay £120 for tyre and windscreen cover, you could easily buy at least 2 brand new tyres for that.  The staff  are on commission for this.

I complained in writing to the Managing Director of Europcar UK and Eventually got told Tough you signed for it.

I have been fighting an attempted scam by Europcar. £523 unauthorized charge appeared on my credit card in March - associated with a rental from Europcar in February. I immediately contacted my c5redit card company who did a charge back. NO communication from Europcar. In July I received a letter from Europcar threatening debt collectors and legal action if I did not pay the £523 which had been charged back by my credit card company. No invoice or bill for the £523 - just demands for payment. I refused but requested a breakdown of charged. August 2012 the debt collectors contacted me threatening to get heavy if I did not pay. I again asked for details of the bill suggesting I would only consider paying if I knew what the bill was for. September 2012 - no more communication from the debt collectors just a solicitors letter threatening to take me to court in 7 days if I do not pay and that I would also then be liable to a huge legal bill as well as Europcar's invoice. I politely told the solicitors to f!!k off until they could provide me with an invoice. In the mean time I have managed to get some detail from the credit card company with regard to the Charge back. Europcar disputed the charge back and provided the credit card company with an invoice, claiming scratches on the left hand doors. The estimate for repair was labour £0, paint £0, special materials £0 but miscellaneous expenses £420 + VAT ... but no indication what the miscellaneous expenses were. Perhaps they were for a close inspection with a microscope to realize that the damage was so minor that it cost £0 to repair. Also the invoice was dated 1 month after the end of the car rental and after I had made my initial complaint to the credit card company. The credit card rejected Europcar's appeal based on the fact the "damage" cost nothing to repair. So now I am really looking forward to my day in court as the evidence is now overwhelming that Europcar have attempted fraud and extortion...I suspect though Europcar will back off at the last minute. The threats, the debt collectors and finally the solicitors letter are all done to frighten the customer into paying.

Europcar are complete scum. I worked for them. They pressure you into making sales and encourage you, very strongly if you get my meaning, to upgrade the vehicle even if you don't need it. The reason the web site says "or similar" when you book is so they can scam you into upgrading. The senior managers are mostly just scum bags. They will always try to pin damage on you as well. Use enterprise. Cheaper, much better customer service and they will not try to rob you blind.

Thank you Michael for confirming my suspicions. I got conned into upgrading to a larger vehicle which more than doubled the cost of the rental. I was told I would easily save this extra because diesel is cheaper than petrol - total rubbish. If I hadn't just got off a plane from Australia with just a 3 hour stopover in Dubai, I would never have signed this but I was tired and jet lagged and just wanted to get to the hotel. I was certainly pressured as the guy said "We have upgraded you" not "would you like to upgrade?" They also charged me twice for one item on the account. I fought them on this and was eventually reimbursed, after 3 months and dozens of emails. I have rented vehicles and leased vehicles in many countries over many years and Europcar Heathrow are the worst in the business!

I worked for Europcar UK in Accident Management and I can tell you that the company is all about how much they can scam the customers.
The favourite trick is assigning damage done by a customer who bought comprehensive damage cover to the next customer who doesn't take out the expensive additional cover.
Also Europcar receive a credit note from the people who repair their cars of approximately 25% this in my mind is fraud, although I haven't found specific legislation that forbids it, perhaps someone else can?

I too have been scammed by Eurocar/Alamo yesterday at Gatwick Airport, London, UK.

I returned the car in the evening, and greeted by a VERY RUDE Eastern European guy who could just about speak English. He walked around the car, and noticed some small scratches (hardly visible to the naked eye), and said that this was caused by me, and so i will have to pay 193GBP (approx $295 US Dollars) for it.

I laughed and said that it must be a joke, as its very small, and in the sunlight, there is no way i would find scratches like that, as whenever i've rented cars previously, it's been dents, dings, large scratches etc that i've been looking for.

His response was "Yes, you would not see it, but I do this everyday, so it's my job, so i do see it."

So i have made a complaint to Customer Care, but from what i have read on the internet, their Customer Care, doesnt really "CARE", and im sure i wont be getting my money back.

This is going to be very time consuming for me to get my hands dirty fighting them, but it's a matter of principle, and i WILL be ensuring that this is rectified....even if that means getting my legal team involved.

SCAMMERS ARE EUROCAR & ALAMO.....BE AWARE!

Similar thing happened to us. Dropped a car back at Gatwick and an Eastern European guy went over it with a fine tooth comb. He noticed "damage" to one of the tyres. We hadn't struck anything but he said the tyre would need replacing. We tried to suggest that any "damage" was wear and tear but he ignored us. They charged us £197 to replace a single tyre. Disgraceful.

I am so upset by Europcar. I never expected that an international company would lack so much integrity. I noticed a week after the car hire that I was charged 490 pounds for one day of car hire from Heathrow to Luton. After another week I finally got a reply from their customer service - who sent us an email to explain why there were these charged. It turned out that they charged 250 pounds for a missing satellite navigation. Now why would I steal a satellite navigation worth half that price knowing that I had left credit card details against something like this. Apparently I should have given the satellite navigation to the counter instead of leaving it in the car. However, I was no informed by any of the staff of this - either in London or in Luton. How was I suppose to know that you can't even trust an international company to do right by their customers.
