Fraudulent Collection Attempt

Afni, inc. sent me a Collection Notice for an unpaid bill from Cingular.  I have never had a Cingular account.  At&t now owns Cingular.  I contacted them and they were rude.  They said they sold the account to Afni and I had to deal with them.  Afni said I had to deal with At&t.  You all should beware of both companies.  At&t refuses to look into the matter.  They are tricky and will even have personal info. on you. If you live in IL file a Consumer Complaint form at the IL Attorney General's website.  Do not pay the bill and check your credit reports.

AFNI has a long record of complaints of "erroneously" billing the wrong person for various telecom accounts.  The Illinois Attorney General has opened an investigation into them, so you should send a dispute and validation request letter to AFNI, certified return receipt requested, and also file complaints with IL AG (even if you are not in IL), FTC, and your state AG.  Also file a complaint with your state public utilities commission against ATT for their aiding and abetting of AFNI's activities.
