Orlando Airport, Florida, May 2009 - Misleading pricing information, not given clear advance information of $10 per day fee for spouse also to drive car, only a prior mention of MAY be additional fee on their web site; we were gouged anyway, staff and supervisor completely unresponsive to our complaints; the "non-smoking" car had an ashtray installed that was full of cigarette ashes that burst open and caused alergic attack; opened center console and found interior coated in brown chocolate frosting.

I made a 2nd complaint by email and got a reply that was empty and moronic and contained no meaningful suggestion of compensation.

Tell everyone to avoid these unscrupulous slime at National car rental !!!

I am hoping someone at National will see this.  I was pegged for a $1 citation for running a toll booth in Florida.  The citation was actually for $1.  National is charging me $10 to process this.  I tried calling and got a tape and could not talk to anyone.  I am an executive level renter there and have no problem paying the $1. However, $10 for the admin fee is ridiculous.  Not only is Florida getting because I didn't have exact change at midnight and no toll taker, but now my prized rental company is taking me.  Way to treat your special members, National.

Uninformed and incredibly rude and lazy young female staff member.  Did not honor quote for weekend rate reserved online, received wrong car, gouged on prices.  Try the airport location if you have the option- at least until she is fired.

Lazy, unhelpful staff at Pearson Int'l Airport in Toronto Canada. I reserved a full size car 3 weeks in advance for a 5 day business trip the week before Christmas - I've been a loyal customer, renting cars from National 5-6 times a year for the last 9 years, not to mention other trips throughout N. America. Emerald Aisle member at an additional annual cost. When I arrived to pickup my car I was told they have none. I was offered a small Toyota sub-compact: not possible for myself (6'4") and the 3 passengers of similar stature. I was told it was Christmas and all the cars bhad been rented out + it was a bad time to rent a car (???) Then why bother making a reservation? I was told - by the manager - "good luck finding a car: everyone else is out of cars as well" ... nice way to treat a valued (sic) customer. I walked 10 ft to the Avis counter and they had a new Chrysler 300 ready to go for LESS $$$$. Last June - same airport - I got dinged 3 months after returning a car with a $389 charge to my credit card for a "broken windshield" ... I called to protest that I knew nothing about this and they explained I had waited too long to refute or challenge their claim against me. Duh! I guess if you keep it a secret till well after the fact, you have me over a barrel with the small print! Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice ... I guess the latest incident is my own fault for giving National a second chance. I will never rent another vehicle from them again. Last check showed I rented 18 times from them in 2009. I guess that means they've seen enough of me and that I should move on. I hope someone at National sees or hears about this. Doubt it would mean a thing to them. Careless and unhelpful do not fully describe this company's policy towards loyal customers. Goodbye National, hello Avis.

I had a theft experience at Logan International Airport in Boston, MA on 6/27/2011. however, the employee that checked in my car was in the driver seat before I had my luggae out of the trunk and my personal carry-on off the passenger seat. I called the State Troopers assigned to that jurisdiction and filled a theft report. I had used the phone on the way to the airport for directions so I am sure of the time and location it disappeared. The Manager informed me that this was a current issue and that laptops and several other iPhones (including his personal iPhone) had been had been stolen out of cars! I submitted an email inquiry with Corporate and have heard nothing from them. My company is 18,000 employees strong and this is their preferred agency. They are currently looking into a higher level complaint wont hold my breath

Ditto on National's toll fee gouging.  I went through
2 successive toll stations in Boston and was short
$1.50 on the last toll.  National reported my appeal
of their $18.50 fee was "pending review by an agent".
That was over 3 weeks  ago with no response and they've
debited by account.  I have to wonder if the "pending
    review" was totally disingenuous.

    Hello,
Please help to resolve the issue with the recent rental…
The National local office (Chile, Santiago on 01/02/2012) did not provide us the confirmed car class luxury - Van for 6 people.
Therefore, the local agency did have a confirmed class car on the lot (pictures have been submitted to NATIONAL earlier), and for some reasons did not accommodate our trip per reservation. Instead we received 2 small cars. One of the offered vehicle, with a stick shift, was not in a good condition. At ~80 km per hour the car starts shaking and pulling itself to the right side of the road (6 people can confirm this). Santiago agent was holding us at the counter ~2 hours, did not provide us with a map and detailed driving directions to the hotel !!!
My reservation was completely messed up. Santiago agency ignored the confirmation. Our vacation was ruined completely!
I am requesting from National a full refund for the past reservation in Chile, Santiago, and free 2 days of my  future rental (the same class) in Europe.
    Thanks, Mark

I am being accused of damage that I didnt do that was already on the vehicle.  I rented the vehicle and didnt see the damage prior to renting the car.  It was dark when I picked it up with no attendant available.  Next morning I saw a dent with scratches in the front and they are alleging it was me and accusing me.  I will never use their service again because of insurance fraud.

National rent a car and Emerald club membership are Scam Artist ! They give you a great quote view! When you return your car ? They charge you customer facility charges , transport facility charge, concession recovery charge , lic fee, sales tax? These are all un foreseen charges. . They are not consistent at all? Customer service is a joke? They hang up on you , will do nothing about trumped up charges? Renters Beware!
