I am having the same issues with rust on my dishwasher after 6 months of purchase. I watched a 20/20 episode that stainless steel products these days contain less nickle than before and a good test is to put a magnet on the product and if it sticks, there is plenty of nickle in the product and it will not rust and if it doesn't stick, it will rust due to lack of nickel. I called Whirlpool and get the same BS comment everyone else is getting about it being "environmental b/c I live by the ocean" and that it is "cosmetic". Why in the world would anyone buy stainless steel products if it will rust 6 months or so after purchase.  I was at work when I called and got this BS response so I had to hold my composure. I will call back and complaining again.  It is sad that people spend their hard earned money to get bad products.

I got the same story from GE quite a few years back.  Later they told me it was because the plastic over the stainless caused the problem due to the appliances being stored in un-conditioned spaces.  The replacement panel never rusted after many years.  Last year I purchased a whole kitchen of Whirlpool.  So far, no rust, but the stuff is junk.  Dishwasher door does not stay down/open unless there are 3 plates in the rack and the rack is pulled out over it.  The refrigerator rumbles like a freight train in the distance.  The stove was replaced the first week as the gasket melted into the oven.  Microwave seems ok.
