Complaint

I will not repeat all the complaints and reports about Directbuy's fraudulent treatment of their members.  All is true.  Just read all the complaints combine them and that's what my husband and I have gone through.  We paid close to $6,000.00 and have bought $000.00 merchandise from them.  NOTHING.  No service nothing from them.  Just took our money and sat back and laughed.  There is now a class action lawsuit which we just received notice of being included.  So I guess somewhere there is a list with our name as members.  We have deceided to exclude ourselves from the class action because I do not believe we would be reimbursed even close to what we have given those crooks.  Of course the court will not let you know how much until the date to exclude yourself from the lawsuit has passed.  We live in Minnesota and I would really like to get together with a few other members and sue.  There is a favorable climate against Directbuy with the courts now,  and I believe our outcome would be better than the class action Swift vs Directbuy.  We have tried different options even calling the owner and pleading for a refund at Christmas.  I am disabled and my husband lost his job a few years ago.  His job was outsourced to China. He is 63 with no prospect of employment in the future.  Yes we really need the money!!  It has been about 5 or 6 years since we joined and I am willing to wait for the right opportunity to get our money back.  I think it is stupid to pay so much and receive less than $500.00 in restitution.  I even thought of picketing in front of their location in White Bear Lake on a busy street.  I just might have to do that this summer.  If I stop just one person from making the mistake we did, it would be worth it.  Determined to succeed in Minnesota.

I would love to be part of a class action against Direct Buy.  We joined many years ago and have hardly used our membership.  I think this company is a rip-off and I would love to get my money back that we paid.  They gave us the spiel about being barred from Direct Buy if we didn't sign up and we couldn't tell anyone about the pricing or what they do.  We should have taken that as a hint.  So Laddie0813 I would be happy to get something going so we could get some money back.

it's been years since I joined.  At the time my gut told me better and I should have known better, but I folded under the high pressured sales pitch too.   I knew it was a mistake as soon as I signed.  Later when I tried to buy things at the Direct Buy store I just could not figure out their cataloge system.  I spent hours at the store looking through product information books trying to make head or tails of it and getting frustrated.  When I asked for help I just  got the run aroung, the clerks had an attitude that was intimidating and I was made to feel so darn stupid.  I was so ashamed of the fact that I was taken advantage of I told my son and no one else, not even my husband who would have had a fit.  I  was so happy when I heard that they were being taken to court.  Although I am sorry to hear that so many others got hustled, it makes me feel somewhat better that I was not alone.  I only wish the law suite had been successful, but my understanding is that it was not.  The owners of this company should be hung for taking advantage and deceiving innocent people.

i just got a check for the lawsuit as well for $20.08 which really pisses me off since it said i thought it said we'd be rewarded $500 now that i read it again it says no more than $500 per person.  I paid over $5000 for my membership.  I should have just got my own lawyer.  Frauded again!

I had written a post in 2013 and I came back to see whether the Swift vs Direct Buy Class Action ever paid out and in what amount.  Because of confusion I was not part of that class action lawsuit.  Boy am I glad that I was not.  I was beginning to think what a mistake I had made, by not being part of the Class Action. At least I would be getting $500.00 instead of nothing.   What a complete travesty of justice.  A $20.00 payout?  I am just speechless.  Maybe I can get my own lawyer or go together with another party who didn't participate.  It's just a matter of principal, as who are they to tell you you have to join the class action & then not tell you before hand what you will be getting.  Every legal professional from all the lawyers & the judges and State's Attorneys General should be disbarred for okaying & accepting this settlement.  What a kick in the butt a second time over.  If they had been subjected to Direct Buys unethical & illegal sales practices, this would never have been signed off on. I had read a blog where one woman had gone to her "neighborhood" Direct Buy and had picketed and caused a raucous in the Co's lobby as she was still a member.  Anything to disrupt & prevent them from signing new members. Maybe this is what we need to do to get the full amount of money we invested in them, returned to us.  You know the old saying hit them in their pocketbook where it will hurt the most. I am really sorry for all the aggravation and false promises given to those who received the $20.00 checks.  I wouldn't cash it for you never know.  I wonder how many hundreds in the class action are angry at the final settlement.  I'd really like to know. UNBELIEVABLE!

My roommate and I joined directbuy in September 2013 because we are redoing our kitchen.
We went there today to pick out our cabinets, we already have a design for the kitchen.
We were told in order to buy cabinets from them we would have to make an appointment with there designer, and pay 300.00. We don't need a designer we already have a design, we told them.
It didn't matter we could not order cabinets with out paying the 300.00.
We lost 2000.00 for joining this co. Never got to order anything.
    What a SCAM!

I'm a 9 year DB member.  I live in Calgary, Canada.  My wife and I purchased our membership for CDN$4000 in 2004, which was about US$3500 at the time.
I haven't had the experiences that I have read on this board and have not felt the need to sue DB.  There have been a few minor issues over the past 9 years for sure, but the local outlet is still here, they have had the vast majority of the product we have wanted when we go or order online, and the Calgary DB has entered into referral relationships with local businesses who give small discounts for DB members.
We have not used DB that much until this year when we did a major reno, but even before this year we made back our entire membership fee by purchasing an expensive leather living room sectional and sofa for $6000 that, at the time, was over $10000 in the two stores that carried it (I went and checked).  We have since ordered two dishwashers (the second as part of this reno), a washer / dryer, a fridge, microwave, gas oven/range, three sinks and faucets, a weight set and bench press, high end iPod headphones, as well as a few other minor things that I'm sure I'm forgetting.  I haven't totalled up our savings, but after recovering our membership fee I would conservatively estimate our savings at around $25,000, including from using local referrals for part of our reno (granite).
I'm only posting this to help those reading to know that not everything about DB is bad or fraudulent.  It sounds to me that DB is run on a franchise model and it depended on where you lived and bought your membership (ie. if your local franchisee was a crook, then you got screwed, but if not it basically worked).  If that's the case, then a class action is appropriate and others in local areas who truly got screwed should definitely try and recover as much as possible through a smaller local class action in your state or province.
When we signed up they did tell me that the membership was only 10 years, and that if you wanted to renew for another 10 you would be able to do so at the same price.  But there was, at least back then, the pressure sales job of "if you leave now without signing up you won't be eligible again for X years" (forget how many).
A couple of suggestions: DB is best for high end things that you would buy as is at another store such as appliances, furniture, etc.  It's definitely less good for stuff that you need to see / touch / feel / experience  before knowing that it's right for you.  So if you're doing a reno and are not that handy or good at understanding what something will look like in real life from a catalogue, then stick to the appliances and simple stuff.  But if you're thinking of joining because you want to buy the same medium to higher end stuff that you would buy in any retail store at a low to medium price point, then as long as your franchisee is not a crook and is stays in business, you can save some good $$.
    Good luck to all!

What happens if I don't cash the $20.00 check after paying 5,000.00 for the membership. I fee I should get back more than twenty dollars. If I got back a penny on the dollar which would be terrible, but at least 50.00 bucks. This is re dic in me lous.
20.00 fricking dollars really. Now I know how those Madoff people felt. I don't care if your giving [***] away Ill never buy another membership to nothing again

My 3 year membership for the Ottawa  DB franchise cost me over 6400$ in 2012. Two years later and I haven't bought anything yet and don't plan to because I have compared their prices including  the shipping costs to my area (90 minutes away from my home) and it is cheaper for me to buy locally. Besides I don't have to wait as long. I just can't afford their high end furniture or appliances.

It is amazing that db is still allowed to defraud consumers after years of shady practices. I signed up this past july 2014. I went in a week after the open house. When I signed up I based my actions on the presentation, did the math and determined that I could recoup my investment with a few purchases renovating my daughters dance studio and our building. The same day I sat with the flooring person who stated that there was a 2 week waiting period for delivery. The presentation said 3 days. That was the 2nd red flag. The first was the manner in which the sales guy spoke probatively trying to determine what I had already been told, before presenting a membership level. That level was 2,000.00 less that what was presented during the open house.  Then there was 2 steps of the application process. I did not realize that the second was applying for a loan to pay them for the balance of my membership fee. They did not disclose that they were applying for credit to pay themselves. That action I believe is the deception and fraud. If I wanted to apply for a loan I certainly would not be to pay a membership fee. So I am researching that angle before moving forward.  Feel free to contact me I anyone has other ideas.

What happens when DB closes the local showroom and you have had the membership since 2009?  I feel that their promise has been broken.  They suggest that members on the area of a closed showroom use their toll free phone service (i.e., home shopping service) for ordering as a substitute for the local showroom.  How can one buy furniture, window coverings, carpet and other floor coverings, etc. without seeing samples?  I tried their home service and was greatly disappointed.  It's too time consuming to wait for fabric samples when one can't see all the offerings in one place.  I also found their salespersons to be ill-informed about the products.  Their home shopping service is a joke.  Bottom line is that when they close a local showroom, members do not get what they purchased as the local showroom is in integral part of the reason for joining DB.  I think members in areas of closed showrooms should seek financial compensation from DB.

I joined BB in February 2015, did not 1st start looking for an item to purchase until 3 months later.  I had paid $600 down and have been making payments of $200-$300 per month.  1st time BB did not carry the item I was looking for, next item there was not select option only one item, the 3rd try. the price was higher than Amazon; I did go through BB process and saved $5, wow.  I told them I wanted to cancel and of course was told it was past the 3 day period. Now the local store is closing so I can't even go in to look at carpets, or flooring, or other possible future items, but only order on-line.  I will be paying $2000 per year for an "on-line: service, and must continue to pay each month on the agreement to not cause my credit rating to be negatively impacted.  I don't have to pay $2,000 to shop and save on other on-line services. The sales pitch received was the show room ability plus on-line option.  I believe they are violating their part of the contract and therefore I am legally correct in terminating the contract.  I sent BB an email stating in greater detail the above and received a quick response that I should read the contract and that my email would be sent to corporate headquarters.  I know what the response will be. I am seeking an attorney to assist me on this matter, whether one on one, or class action suit.  Any ideas out there?

If the club closes, they breached the membership agreement... you signed up for a club membership, not an online "club". You can call the contract non enforceable, because they breached the contract and changed the services that you originally contracted for. File a complaint with the Attorney General.
