Customer Service is not available when needed, poor customer support!

I purchased a Dirt Devil Cordless Stank-up Vacuum, after assembly the charging system, inclusive of directions, do not clarify whether it is properly working.  The customer service telephone is not for other than week days, leaving customer in dark whether item is a lemon or working ok.  All directions fail to clarify anything.  40+ miles to and from retail store is expensive when customer can't find answers.
