I was a member of PTI Smithtown for years. For those of you who son't know it is an appointment only personal training facility. You can not set foot in the gym unless you are a member with a pre-scheduled appointment. I had to put my membership on hold because I couldn't make my working mom schedule fit their hours (Closed Sunday, only open til 1:30pm on Saturday.) I had put my membership on hold before and there had never been an issue. During that period, my step-daughter became very ill. I went in before Thanksgiving, met with the manager, filled out a form to terminate my membership because there was no way I could forsee returning any time soon. I gave the paper to the front-desk attendant. The gym then proceeded to charge me over $1200 for monthly fees four months beyond when I terminated.
When I contacted the gym, they claimed that I never came cancelled my membership and that they didn't have the form. After months of fighting, lawyers, etc... I lost my money because I couldn't prove that I had filed the paper. In all of the years that I had been there I had frozen and un frozen my membership several times (required even just for short vacations). I was never given a receipt of confirmation for any of those transactions and it was never a problem. What I though may have been an honest mistake or oversite on their part now seems like a deliberate fraud.
The absolute worst part for me was that this is a one-on-one gym. These people become like friends. They know you well. They act like they care about you. They know I came in, they know I cancelled, they know that they charged me for more then 40 sessions that I never received. They knew that my daughter was in and out of the hospital and they never once called and said, "hey, how are you? Listen we are going to keep charging you even though we haven't seen you for months. You can't prove you filled out the form and we have a contract." THEY NEVER ONCE TRIED TO SCHEDULE THE SESSIONS BECAUSE THEY KNEW I HAD LEFT!!
Their web-site talks about their commitment to their clients but it's a lie.
THEY KEPT OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR SESSIONS THAT THEY NEVER PROVIDED!! DON"T GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD!!
They're not your friends, they don't care about you. Save your money. I switched to a gym paid A LOT less for the personal training, and have no contract scam to worry about (I pay month to month IN CASH).
