This number isn't a standard US phone number, but it called me three times late last night. By the third time I answered (I don't pick up if I don't recognize the number) and they immediately hung up on me. A bit disconcerting -- Has anyone else had similar experiences?

It is common for autodialed telemarketing calls to hang up on answering.  It usually means they are dialing ahead of available telemarketers ("predictive" dialing) and at the time you answer, none are available.

FCC autodialer regulations place limits on how soon they are supposed to answer and identify themselves, but some telemarketers ignore all regulations on this, as well as Do Not Call requirements, resulting in repeated "dead" calls.  Autodialed telemarketing calls are also supposed to accurately identify the caller with caller id, including a number you can call to stop their calls, but the shadiest, lowest ones often send useless or erroneous caller id information, attempting to interfere with enforcement of the law through complaints to the FTC.

You would be right to be suspicious of such calls.  In fact, these days, you would be right to be suspicious of ALL unrequested calls from any "company" you don't already know.  The phone has become the tool of liars and snakes, so only bad can come from answering them.

I was getting 888, 800 and "out of area" calls 4 to 7 times a day. Verizon has a wonderful feature called "Caller Intercept". It costs about $6.00 a month. The feature also has "call blocking." Once you subscribe, "Out of Area and Non identified callers will be asked to identify themselves. You can choose to allow any number of numbers to be unblocked as well as certain numbers to be blocked. All of these options are easily accomplished by dialing Verizon's toll free number with your passcode. The system will prompt you for all he options.
Bottom line: I finally have peace and quiet. The $6.00 is worth every penny!!!
