We had a confirmed reservation with Europcar for picking up a car in Caen on Sunday, June 3, 2012,returning it to Cherbourg on June 6, 2012. (Res # 926564104) Our credit card was charged for the 3 day rental plus extra for the Sunday pick-up and a GPS. We were advised to check with the hotel a few doors down if no one was there. We arrived in Caen and the office was closed; the hotel had no record of our rental and no car for us. Instead of a trip to Rouen as planned, we spent the afternoon trying to get in touch with someone from Europcar..unsuccessfully even with assistance from our hotel manager. We ended having to pay for taxis everywhere that day. The next morning we returned to the rental office. No explanation as to why no one was there when we had a confirmed pickup; no apology; no upgrade offered; no compensation. They cancelled the original reservation, and we were given a new contract for a 2 day rental and told we would receive credit for the Sunday Pickup charge, the 1 days' rental, and for the GPS. Now we have received a copy of a paid invoice for the 2 day rental with no credit showing. Instead of being charged anything, we should have been given a credit for the difference between the first rental contract and the second.  We would like an explanation.

Be very careful when you rent a car with EUROPCAR in Bruges, Belgium. I was a victim of a big scam by the people at this office.  I was told it will be OK to return the car on Sunday even though the office will be close.  They said just park the car and drop the keys through the office door.  When I returned home to the US, I had a bill from EUROPCAR for damage to the car and another one for fuel.  First, I took pictures of the car when I left it at the parking lot.  The car was in the exact same condition as it was when  I picked it up in Dusseldorf.  There was no damage to any part of the car not even a scratch in the paint. Also, I kept a receipt from the gas station in Bruges where I filled the gas tank on my way to return the car.  My Credit card company has been trying to get prove of the damages from Europcar but so far in three months they haven't sent anything.  To me this is a scam to get extra money from foreign tourist.  The car was perfect when I left and the tank was full.  I know it and they know it so it is a shame that a company I used to consider honest will do this to its customers.  Stay away from Europcar in Bruges.
