Probably a telemarketer, but might be a phishing scam.

Assuming you won't roll over and buy anything from any sales pitch, you could engage the enemy to find out any identifying information (type of "product", company or product name, call back number, etc.), and file an FTC complaint, including that they are not only violating the Do Not Call list law, but spoofing their caller id info.  Do NOT provide ANY information, acknowledge anything they ask you, or agree to ANYTHING.

To shut them up, you might also tell them the call is being recorded, or just hang up.

If this continues to be a problem, there are devices for blocking all autodialed telemarketing calls, while still allowing your friends and family to call thru.

Appears to be a survey company, "Kramer Group", getting around the Do Not Call list law.  Legally, telephone surveyors are not required to scrub their lists of Do Not Call numbers, but they are also ignoring direct requests to cease calling, which is just plain rude.  They also appear to be violating autodialer laws that required that live persons answer within so many seconds most of the time.  Also, autodialers must identify their number via caller id, to allow enforcement.  They cannot be identified or called back thru the "877-888-8888" number that shows on caller id.

    "Regina - 31 Dec 2007
called several times and when questioned the male voice said "i am caling from the kramer group and want to ask some questions about hospitals". when i asked for my number to be removed because it is an unplublished number the male caller responded "i am sorry we do not have the ability to remove you number" and hung up.

there is something very wrong in this country when we do not have the right to as our number be removed!!!  very wrong!!

After receiving dozens of hang-up messages from 877.888.8888 (usually about five a day), I finally answered the phone and was told the call was a "political survey". I said I was on "do not call" and told them to take my number off their call list, and the caller apologized and said he would. I asked repeatedly who he represents, and he finally relented: Janet Napolitano. Beware, fellow Arizonans!

Technically, the Do Not Call list does not apply to telephone surveyors, nor to political calls.  Congress wrote themselves an exemption.

However, they should still cease calling if you specifically ask them to, even if they are in the exempt categories.

I receive 4 to 8 calls a day from this number.  Only twice this month has a human answered in the alloted FCC 4 seconds.  The caller states she is calling from a "Not for Profit" group called Health Care United. www.healthcareunited.org. 866-766-8449.  The first time they were takeing a survey about hospitals, the second time the were promoting voting in the Florida primary.  When I asked to be removed from their call lists, they claim that they are exepmt.  They are a front for a health care workers union SEIU.
    I have submitted 3 FCC complaints. http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html

I got one of those 1-877-888-8888 calls.  They said they were calling for John McCain and wanted to know if we got the dvd they sent.  Interesting they dont identify that on the caller id.  Are they trying to hide or get around the do not call list we are on!

Fools call on a Sunday night...Get F'd you idiots! Get a LIFE!

Most of the people that work as telephone surveyors are college kids trying to make a few bucks between classes, I am actually one of them. Do I like what I do? No. Bob do you really think I want to be calling you on a Sunday night? No. I just dont have a choice unless I want to be making $0 an hour sitting on my rear end so why dont you go get F'd...
Most of the survey companies get your number from a private list source like we do and it is completely legal because we are not trying to sell anything to you.
If you ask surveyors to add you to the no call list they will... but normally just for that project, if a new project arises in your area a new list is purchased and your number may be on that one.
When someone calls asking for the head of the household and you respond "oh he/she isnt here right now" that just means you are going to get called back some other time, some people think we wont call back for that project.
Tell us youre not interested, heck just hang up on us and we wont call you for that project anymore... but do you really have to act like a child and go on a rant that winds up taking half the time to take the survey anyway?

You may be working for a legitimate survey company, conducting a legitimate survey, but there are people out there claiming to be surveying who are actually engaged in deceptive and fraudulent telemarketing, or criminal phishing.

It is a sad characteristic of the world we live in that most unexpected calls that people are likely to receive are from deceptive predators, regardless of who they claim to be.  This, despite laws against deceptive telemarketing and fraud, laws against deceptive, abusive and harassing collection, and Do Not Call lists at both state and federal levels.  There are callers who will use even a declined sales pitch as an opportunity for fraud and theft.

The wisest security policy today is to not talk to strangers.  At least caller id makes this practical without cutting you off from people you know or companies you actually do business with, but even caller id is routinely spoofed.

The number of different patterns of scams based on telephone calling is rather small, but the number of people engaged in them is large and growing.  If you don't believe this, just look through any category of complaints on this site.

If this makes legitimate cold-calling telemarketing or surveying obsolete, too bad.

I have received numerous calls on my unlisted, unpublished number from their "survey company".  Immediately after they introduce themselves, I make note of it on a pad that I keep by my telephone.  I then remind them of the previous calls and that I had told them to remove my name, address, and telephone number from their mailing and calling lists.  But after being unsuccessful at the removal of my information, I contacted the Attorney General in the state where I live, to file a complaint.  I also discovered that another option is to contact Barack Obama in writing, and let him know that you will be expecting to hear from him, regarding this problem, within 30 days from the date of your letter.  Keep a copy of this letter for your records, and let the President handle it.  If you do not hear from him, search the political campaign web sites and call their toll free numbers or write to them.  If this doesn't work, contact your Secretary of State's office.  But don't quit, until the caller quits!

These people who run this number need to be stopped, The next telemarketing call I get I am picking up that phone and I am going to try playing the disconnected number tones over the phone. im going to keep doing this until its stops and if it doesnt im going to file a complaint against these people for harassment. I'll probably make a video about it and upload it to YouTube so that other ppl can see it and maybe Barack Obama will see it and might do something about it b/c these calls are getting out of hand and its annoying. they call mostly in the morning to midday. please someone stop these people because they are harrassing me and possibly other people.
