Two months ago (January 2010) I noticed a $30 charge on my Discover credit card for "PAYMENT PROTECTION PPD". I called into Discover to investigate the charge, and they told me it was a recurring monthly fee that I was being charged because I was part of their Payment Protection Plan.

I never signed up for this service.

I told the representative on the phone that I never signed up for any such service, and demanded a refund. She told me that because I had been signed up for the service for so long, she would not issue me any refunds, but she would cancel my enrollment.

I continued to demand a refund, and she told me Discover would have to conduct an "investigation" that could take 4-6 weeks. If Discover could prove that I did not sign up for this service then she would issue me a refund.

I never heard anything back and called in 6 weeks later to inquire about the status of my investigation. I was told that no one ever started any investigation, and if I wanted to request one, I would have to wait ANOTHER 4-6 weeks for them to determine if I signed up for the program. I asked to speak to a manager, was denied and told the only thing I could do was continue to wait.

Two weeks later I received an email from Discover saying they had refunded the fees they had been illegally charging me SINCE MAY 2009.

There was no apology in the email, no statement showing there was ever any "investigation", and no mention of refunding any interest I was charged on these fees.

This company is illegally signing people up for extra services without consent and charging them monthly. "Buyer" beware!

As all the others, I only recently noticed this charge on my statements and immediately Googled what it was for. After coming across this site, I called Discover, mentioned I never signed up for the program, and without hassle or question, they said they would put it into dispute status. Just 2 weeks later I've been reimbursed over $3,600. I also went back into my transaction history and noticed in 2012 I was credited about $123 for a payment protection settlement. This must have been the small chunk awarded after the lawsuit. I'd much rather have my $3,600+ back- glad I called!

Just called Discover. The lady told me the protection plan had been signed up for since the card was opened. I said that was not the case. She immediately offered a full refund.  Quick and painless.

As with the last three posts from 2014, I also became aware of the Protection Plan on my account. I called at least twice to cancel the service.  I went thru all of my statements and it was on there every month since 2009. Not really sure what happened or why it stayed on my account, but it did.

One day, I was like I should probably call and cancel this. Not sure why that particular day, but it hit me. I started doing some research and ran across a post in which the person said they got a full refund from the time it was put onto their account. I immediately went through all of my statements and figured out how much I would expect to get back, then I made the phone call. It was actually pretty simple. I called, told them I want to cancel this, again, because I never signed up for it. She said okay, not a problem. It would take about 1 billing cycle to refund you the money. I didn't even have to ask...or argue!

That same day they opened an investigation and put the initial refund of the 2014 fees and interest charges onto my account.  About 3 weeks later, I saw the rest of the fees credits to my account, followed by an e-mail from discover saying the investigation was closed. The amount refunded was spot on (minus the interest fees) with what I calculated.

Thank you everyone! I just noticed this charge on my bill and I've had this card for 5 years. They refunded me all of the fees plus interest for the last 5 years. I'm so glad I searched what this fee was for!

This is my first and only credit card. I had it since I was a teen, and I just thought "Payment Protection" was something I had to pay. I've seen it a few times on my account, but only inquired with them after reading these posts. I keep a very low to zero balance on my account so the "insurance" is not needed.

I have received a case number number from discover and am awaiting my refund.

Thank you all for your help.

contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
      www.consumerfinance.gov

They filed a lawsuit against Discover over this issue several years ago.  Discover settled, and they are subject to a consent agreement as a result, that includes consumer redress.

    Well,

I actually called Discover after finding this website and guess what,  I did not sign up for this program either! I've been a member since 2009 and was just told that Discover will investigate, and I do see a dispute in my account-I'm hoping my outcome will be as good as the others here. I feel so bad for not being more diligent about looking at my monthly statement.

I have a question. My mother in law received a phone call from discover card that I owe them almost $600. My husband told me soon as we got home. But the thing is I never own a discover card. But, my bank account got hacked 2 years ago and last year. We already call discover card about this matter. What step they going to do. I'm an immigrant so their is no way I can apply for a creadit card. Do I need to pay discover card even if the one who's using the account aren't me?

It may be a fraudulent account.. replies to Eva

or it may be just a scam.  There are collection agencies who are real sloppy about who they try to collect from, relying on most consumers not knowing the law (FDCPA) which requires that they handle disputes or provide proof of the alleged debt when requested.  There are others who inflate alleged "accounts", blast out a bunch of letters based on just some name match, or even fake "debt".

Many of these scams avoid mail contact, preferring to collect through harassing and abusive phone calls, which often start with calls to relatives used to "embarrass" and coerce payment while evading validation.

If they call.. replies to It may be a fraudulent account..
demand they send a letter notifying you of the debt.  They're legally required to do that anyway, and the legitimate debt collectors will do so, while the frauds will answer with threats.

if they are legitimate, but the debt is not, mail them a dispute letter, indicating that this is not your account, and demanding they send proof.  Mail it certified.  If they continue to harass you for payment without providing proof, you can sue them.  If it looks like this "account" is real but fraudulent, file an id theft complaint with your local police and get a copy of the police report, which you can use to dispute fraudulent accounts, including if they're on your credit report.

get an attorney and sue them. You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

I had been enrolled in this program for six years. I stupidly never looked at the fees close enough to see it. I actually did lose my job once in that time, so I would have been eligible for it. But I didn't do it because I didn't know about it. Without a job my bill went higher and higher, and so did did the fee for this program. When I got my new job and started digging into the bill I saw the huge fee (120 dollars a month). I looked into it and found this site. I called to cancel and said I never signed up and would have used it if I knew about it. Sure enough the next day I was issued a nearly 5,000 dollar refund for fees and interest. Thank you!

Trying to get Discover to pay me back also.  Was told it was my "fault" because I didn't "discover" the charges.  Was told I would only get 6 months worth of refund, even though it had been going on since 2007.   How can I get the rest of the money that they owe me for this fraud?

I'm in the same boat. Just noticed the charges which started back in 2009 when I opened my account. I was told I was only able to get up to 6 months back. I have called 4 times asking for managers and supervisors... No luck on getting more than 6 months refunded.

Recently took over bills for my grandmother (88yo) and came across the Payment Protection Plan that has been ongoing since she opened the card in 2009! Her average spending in the last 4 years is $500/year. Her card is maxed out at $8k because of this fee and interest it has incurred. Since it has been on card since day one, she thought it was needed in case card was stolen/lost. Contacting Discover tomorrow and hoping for the best but expecting the worst.
