Trying to Cancel Membership

I have been trying to cancel my membership. I have been contacted several times by LA Fitness because my cc expired.  I told them I want to cancel the membership.  They could not do this over the phone and had to visit a club.  I've visited the LA Fitness in Countryside IL several times and ask for the manager (as instructed).  They keep telling me the manager is not in and to come back at X time.  I do.  They now tell me they cannot give me the letter until I settle my account. I have a balance (and a late charge) on my account  -- BECAUSE I CANNOT CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP.

This is completely insane and I will ensure to let everyone I know not to join / frequent LA Fitness because of their unethical business conduct and rude staff.
