Number reassigned to someone without notice

During my 2 months abroad visit, AIrtel reassigned my number to someone. I was actively using my Airtel number since 2007. I have also recharged my number prior to my abroad trip . I am not sure what kind of tracking mechanism Airtel is using to verify the active numbers. This is really a security concern since i have multiple bank accounts linked to this number.
