Too Good To Be True
Country: United States
I received a call from a man with a thick Pakistanian accent telling me I had been selected for a grant from the Federal Reserve Bank, NY for $8500.00 since I had not filed bankruptcy in the last 6 months, paid bills on time and had never been behind on taxes. They said it was a once in a lifetime offer and I would not be entitled to this again. They offered to pay either through Western Union at my local Wal-Mart or through a bank card (if I would provide them the number). They then told me to call 202-683-9664 (which is a Google VOIP number-- which would never be done through the government). I called the number and was sent to an answering machine for google several times. Then, they called me back and a lady was on the line and had stated her name and asked how she could help me. I informed her that she couldn't and that I was reporting her for fraud and hung up.
The government will NEVER send money through Western Union, nor will they use a VOIP phone number through Google.

PLEASE be careful of these scams!

I received a call from a private number telling me that I was chosen to receive $8500.00 from the government.  I was asked if I wanted to go through western union or Wal-Mart. So playing around with them I said Wal-Mart. I was then told to call  202-683-9664 to contact the government... I'm not that dumb. Please be aware of these people!!!

If it's too good to be true then it IS too good to be true!  As above, this guy said exactly the same thing.  He was reading a script and got irritated when I said this sounded too good to be true.  Why would the government give $8500 to people who pay their bills and haven't filed bankruptcy?  They wouldn't;  It's a scam.

Just received a call from an Indian or Pakistani woman who I could barely understand...same pitch as above I said I'll go to CVS to pick up the money.  I find it hard to believe CVS has 8500 in cash to give out via western union.. The caller ID showed up as Sprint Operator.  She said call 202-683-9664 which I wont do.

I got call from a number 624-513-2589 telling I was chosen for grant of 8,500 by the government. He told to call the number 202-683-9664 with my grant id number to get this money. Be careful with your personal information.  Since when the US gov gives you a grant without apply for it.

So how can we report these people so that they stop calling and trying to scam people? The same thing just happened to me and I was told to go to Walgreens to recieve the money. I've worked in retail my whole life n I would be getting the whole safe if I went to Walgreens because they don't hold that much money.

Just received the same call.  Listed to him.  Not going to do anything he said which was to get gift card & put $250 on it & then go to Walmart to get $8,500 via Central Bank of NY.  His # is 202-683-9664, ext 106 with name of Mike Anderson.  He also said I could get money via debit or credit card.  I wasn't stupid enough to give him that info.  I received 2 calls today.
