Ex Member in Texas
Country: United States
I had been a Ballys member on and off since 1999. I havn't had a contract with Ballys for at least 5 years and therefore I did not have one with Blast. I was informed Blast would be taking over my Ballys membership. My Ballys membeship was paid in one payment up front at the beginning and ran through March of 2013. I thought I'd try Blast out for a few months to see if I liked them. I didn't so I let my membership expire. With Ballys, if I didn't pay the next year my membership it would expire. Ballys would send renewal notices and I would renew when they finally got the membership rate back down. Blast tried to charge $181.52 on my credit card when my membership expired even though I was not set up for that and never informed that would happen. A Level 2 Blast club manager at Thousand Oaks basically called me a liar and stupid for not reading my contract even though I tried to explain that I did not have one. He tried to tell the autowithdraw notice was in fine print on the notice of change in ownership. He also said Ballys was charging me that even though I told him that the charge read Blast Fitness. He said there is nothing he could do and passed me off to ABC Financial. I did have better luck with them. They listened and they reversed the total charge. I was not charged $59 the [***] said I'd have to pay to cancel a contract I never had. I will never step foot in Blast Fitness again! The clubs have gone downhill and the staff are a bunch morons.

Ballys got caught by the Texas Attorney General sending renewal notices to former customers who they knew had not renewed, that implied threats to damage credit for this "delinquent account".
Bet the Texas AG would really like to know they are at it again, no matter how many times they change their name. Ballys is probably bound by a consent agreement to settle the Texas charges, and it would take more that a sale of the company to get out of it.
Texas AG can through their contract games right back at them.
