When you open an account, you are making an application for credit.  If you are rejected based on information obtained from a credit report, the company is required to send you an adverse action notice notifying you of which credit report they pulled that contained the information they based their decision on.

Request a copy of your credit report from that credit reporting agency (CRA), Experian, Equifax, or Transunion.  Since you have been rejected, they are required to provide you your credit report free of charges.

Review the entries on the report, and dispute any errors through the CRA.
The CRA "investigates" by forwarding the dispute to the original data furnisher (presumably Verizon, or a collection agency collecting on a Verizon account), who is required to remove, correct, or verify that information.

but they "verify" it anyway, get an attorney, as your next step may be to sue them for posting erroneous information damaging your credit.  You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

    Be aware..
that there is at least one collection agency, AFNI, with a history of "sloppy" collection of old Verizon accounts, which has damaged the credit of thousands of consumers.  They have had to settle with state Attorneys General, and lost a federal class action lawsuit over deceptive collection of accounts erroneously billed to the wrong people.  Many of these "accounts" were old Verizon accounts originating from Verizon purchases of other telecoms, often with incomplete records, which they "fixed" to match some person they could locate and bill.
