Early Upgrade Fee

I signed a 3 year contract back in Dec. 2010 with Rogers.  I have never missed a payment and I had to pay $200 down plus the $30 for my Blackberry Curve 9300.  I was promised that I would receive that $200 back after a year.  So a year later I never received it, instead it went directly towards paying off my phone bill... Not my issue however, but it was my first "Okay...." moment with Rogers.

Now, 2 years later after being on the same plan never upgrading my phone despite being eligible I would like to change my plan around and I was FOR getting a new phone since mine isn't working all that great.  I was told my a Rogers employee that I needed to pay $169 early upgrade fee, plus the $200 for the phone, and a $35 admin fee.

THAT IS INSANE.  I can understand the phone and the "admin fee" but $169 for a silly upgrade fee despite never upgrading before?

I cannot wait until this contract is over.  I have already been offered MUCH better plans from Bell Canada and Telus.

Kyle from ON, Canada.

Hi Kyle, you received a new piece of hardware in December 2010, which means under our current hardware upgrade program you'll be eligible for new-customer pricing on a hardware upgrade in about one year. The hardware upgrade program is promotional and changes from time to time. You're almost always eligible for a hardware upgrade, but you'll need to pay the early upgrade fee. I have never upgraded my phone.  I started my plan in Dec 2010.

2 months ago there was no EUF since I've never upgraded.  Now there is?  It's cheaper to CANCEL my plan than to not only get a new phone, but also have to sign a NEW 3 year contract.

      I'm overpaying as it is.

      Cancelling plan after Christmas.
