Unauthorized charges to bank card

Found charges of 29.95 for the past 6 months on my bank statement.  Called the MVQ company, and they claim that the charge was derived from someone in my home going on "spendonlife.com" and clicking on an offer for identity protection.  The problem is no one in my household ever did this. I do not know how they got my bank card number.  Also, they immediately reimbursed me for the entire 6 months, without any questions. Wow!  I believe that an attorneys general should look into this company.  After all, if they just take money from people's bank accounts and then just say sorry and give the money back if they caught...that's not a bad business, especially if they can average a 6 month floator better, like they got in my case.
I guess I better start reading my bank statements every month. Yikes...

As you would see if you reviewed complaints against this and similar companies, consumers who were directed by their bank to contact this "merchant" first were often stuck with additional fraudulent charges, and met with stonewalling on any information on where they got their account information.

This is NOT because the company doesn't have that information, but because they know that if they disclose it, their "marketing partner" will likely be sued or prosecuted.  The New York Attorney General is currently investigating similar scams and their marketing partners, many of whom have agreed to stop passing consumer account information.

Other consumer reports indicate that their banks immediately reversed the charges and blocked the account to stop additional fraud.

Several payment processors in the VISA system have recently announced changes in VISA policy regarding merchant practices damaging to the "brand", including negative option marketing schemes.

If you have problems in getting your bank to accept and act on a fraud dispute, send your dispute IN WRITING to the dispute address (not the address for payments) from your statement, and mail it certified so you have proof of when it was sent, to prove the dispute was within the 60 day FRB Reg. E or FCBA dispute windows.  If your bank fails to reverse fraudulent charges disputed in a timely fashion, file a complaint against your bank with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, at www.occ.gov

As you can see from all these complaints, your bank's advice is worthless in preventing additional fraud.  Most consumers who followed that advice were met with stonewalling, or possibly promises to cancel or "look into it", followed by more fraudulent charges.  If they can get consumers to delay for 60 days from the statement showing the disputed charges, the bank will generally no longer reverse the charges, and they know they will get to keep the money.  That is their game.

Get a better bank, who will protect YOUR interests, not some scammer's.

I was charged not once, not twice, but three times by this company, at the same time, on the same day, for a whopping total of $92.00 I'm on the phone (on hold, of course) with the fraud department of my credit card company because thankfully, they put a block on my card, realizing the charges were suspicious. These people just suck.

Polk Co. Iowa District Court Judge Hutchinson noted that Vertrue's total Iowa membership revenues over a twenty-year period exceeded $36 million, even after previous refunds to consumers were subtracted.

Call your CC or Bank institution. They will refund your money.

I was scammed by  this company too.  I opened my American Express bill and found a charge of $16.95 for membership.  I was out of the state at the time of the billing, and my card was with me.  American Express has blocked them charging to my account again.  The Government should shut them down

    who are these people
I always pay my credit card bill online without ever checking it.  In checking my latest statement I see a charge of $19.95 for MVQ*PRIVACYM and another charge of $19.95 for MVQ*PRIVACYMID.  I checked my past statements an found this has been going on for nine months! I called to complain about this and they want my account number. I could not give the one because I do not have one.  Then, they asked for my credit card number which I would not give to them  This has cost me almost $360.00. I am the only person using this credit card. I called my credit card company and they connected me with MVQ.  What am I being charged for?

They have only given me credit for $19.95 out of this. Seeing I had not checked my credit card statement for the last eight months, as I pay online, it looks like I am going to be out $341.00.

I was defrauded by MVQ too to the tune of $777 bucks.  Call 1-888-239-0316 and complain as loudly as you can.  They have credited me one month so far and have offered me a full refund, but 3 weeks later, I've yet to see the full amount.  If they give you a confirmation no. for your cancellation, keep it handy, because you'll probably need to keep on them until you get your money back.  Good luck.  Lesson learned.

I too have lost at LEAST hundreds of dollars to this company thinking it was something Mom signed up for here before she was no longer able to use the computer.  The number above says "For Emergency Calls Only", and no matter what I do, I can't make it ring in.  Does anyone have another number for them?  Thanks KP

I called my credit card company and they luckily could put a stop on the charges. I couldn't get in touch with these criminals. I should have looked into the strange charge on my card, but I thought it was through my bank -- which had a similar "fraud protection" name. Look at your statement every month very carefully. I certainly will from now on.

They have taken me for almost $400.00.  I pay my bills online and never bother to check.  I happened to check this month and saw two charges for $19.95 each from MVQ.  I had to google to find out who these people are.   I found out this has been going on for ten months.  They latched onto me at classmates.com.  I never received anything in the mail and did not know they were stealing money from me.  I called and was on hold for fifteen minutes.  They would only give me credit for one month. They have been given an "F" rating as a company, the lowest possible rating.  There has to be a way we can sue these crooks to get our money back!

    you're dumb as dirt
    Hey Genius,

Explain how I was supposed to read the fine print when I NEVER WENT ANYWHERE NEAR these crooks.  I have never used my CC anywhere but at legitimate brick & morter businesses yet they "signed" me up for MVQ and MNI.

Why I used the utterly BS letter they sent me with an ID#, all I found on there was a completely fake email they had on file for me and a "the server is down" message when I pressed the "cancel my membership" button.

    Dear TJ,
Thank you for your post, finally some useful information about the credit report scam I have unknowingly been a victim of for 16 months to the tune of $340. An outfit called MVQ credit report has been billing my credit card since Jan 2010 $19.95 monthly then $24.95 monthly in 2011.
My husband pays the bills and I looked at the statement since I am due several refunds from the past month and saw the charge, called immediately
the 800# was on the statement thank God and I was totally floored.
The first thing you feel is shame, shame at your own stupidity isn't that ridiculous? This is my own CC with a low limit I took out to keep myself on a budget, I immediately googled MVQ, nothing but FRAUD, SCAM and the manager tells me well you signed up for it. Is this your address etc and you feel like you did something wrong. Really my first reaction was anger, but that manager shamed me. I already looked up THEIR states Atty General,
now thanks to you I know its MY states Atty General and also so much more useful info. thank you so much, now I feel like I know how to proceed.
Bless you and I'm assuming this happened to you too and you are a very bright HUMAN being. How do these people sleep at night? If I never ghet a dime back we'll live but the stories I've been reading, senior citizens,
    young single mothers, it's heartbreaking.
Thank You TJ. I feel so much better and empowered thanks to you!

I thought I was alone and fighting three battles. One to discontine a once authorized deduction by Netzero. Others to stop MVQ and Easy Saver never authorized deductions.
This is a great way for a company to make money. Two to three $ per month from 25,000 or more accounts.
They need to be wiped out!
