They commonly hide some alleged terms they claim you agreed to, generally much less prominently than their advertising of a supposedly "free" offer. That is what makes their offer deceptive, their claim that "you authorized the charges" bogus, and therefore the charges you may not have expected unauthorized and fraudulent. If they are operating as such a borderline scam, they may also be getting account information from other "merchants", or even just making "mistakes" and charging the wrong person's account.
Your bank can reverse such charges if you dispute them promptly, just as they can reverse charges if someone tried to run through a forged check.
Immediately dispute unauthorized charges through your bank, and close that account due to fraud to prevent additional such charges. Follow up with a WRITTEN DISPUTE send to your bank's dispute address from your statement, and make sure your bank receives your dispute within 60 days of the statement date of the statement that shows the disputed charges to preserve your FRB Reg. E dispute rights.
If your bank will not assist you in reversing fraudulent charges, file a complaint against your bank with OCC (www.occ.gov) and start searching for a better bank or credit union. You don't need a bank who "safeguards" your money by handing it out to scammers.
