Randomly tearing holes in the clothing

For the last 2 year I have owned a used Sears Duet Whirlpool Washer and dryer.  Over the last year it has been randomly tearing holes in the family's clothing.  I thought about changing some parts but based on what I am reading here this is a know problem with the washer.  Rather I would call it a defect since it has happened to numerous people listed here.  Not to mention the ones that do not report the problem.  I think it will be less costly to buy a new washer.
