In October 2009 my wife contacted Verizon for internet and landline services. My wife waited for a call back from Verizon to let her know when they would be coming out to install the services.  We received a bill from Verizon but we didn't have any internet and landline services with them at that time.  Unfortunately in the Gordonsville, Virginia, Verizon was the only company that we could get the servicess we needed.

We contacted them to let them know that we didn't have service and that we should not have received a bill.  When we signed up for the services in December 2009 we had all of our services bundled together, landline, internet, cellphone, and direct tv.  The way this service works is that we would have one bill.  We were to send in the payment and the money would be dispersed to pay all interested parties.

After only three months my wife was contacted Verizon and she was told that the one bill bundled package was not being offered in Gordonsville, Virginia so we had to pay each bill separatedly.  We sent our payments in each month and in June of 2010 we moved from Gordonsville, Va to Fredericksburg.  We made our final payment after receiving our final bill.  In January 2011 I got my credit report and I say where Verizon had put on my credit report 584.17 that I had not paid.  My wife and I have contacted several representatives and supervisors from Verizon and we have been told that we don't owe any money for any services.

I received a letter from CBE a collection stating that I owed this money and my wife contacted them and explain and showed them checks and credit card payments that she made.  I just received a credit report and this information on my credit report and I have made several disputes to Verizon and the collection agency.  My credit has been tremendously impacted by this I've lost 60 points because of this erronous information.  Please help me with this we have paid this money.

File a complaint with FCC against Verizon.  Although FCC may not do anything to Verizon, Verizon will at least have to respond, and the complaint will go through a different channel than your contacts to date, and the fact that you filed a dispute will be registered.

In addition, contact your state Attorney General for assistance.

As for the debt collector, send a written dispute, mailed certified, disputing the alleged debt.

After verifying their receipt, dispute the credit report entry through the credit reporting agency.  If the debt collector "verifies" the erroneous entry that Verizon says you don't owe, without sending you proof from Verizon that you owe it, sue them for the damage to your credit.

I have read the Fair Credit Reporting Act and it is so weak and sparse that it appears that it had been enacted after it had been lobbied full of loopholes by creditors.
