"Settlement Offer" from Afni, Inc.

An official looking letter from Afni, Inc arrived claiming an outstanding debt was owed to QWEST from 2004.  Really?  And they were offering a settlement of half the original "debt".  I was pleased to see all the information/complaints posted on-line about this fraudulent company.  Before throwing this letter in the trash, be sure to take 5 minutes to post/complain/report so we can work together to stop these crooks.

AFNI has a long history of complaints of deceptive collection, including investigations by the Minnesota Attorney General over collection of unowed debts, and a recent decision by a federal judge that their letter in reply to consumer disputes was materially misleading and deceptive.

If you receive a collection letter from any debt collector, and especially if it appears to be an erroneous unowed debt, send a dispute letter, mailed return receipt reqested, to invoke your FDPCA dispute rights.  If you do so within 30 days of receiving their first letter, they are prohibited from further collection activity until they obtain and send you proof of the debt from the original creditor.

If you have problems with collection of unowed debt, or other illegal collection activities, contact your state Attorney General.  You should also contact a consumer attorney.  You might try www.naca.net
